Character Figure Models and Kits

Toys and models of various kinds are produced by manufacturers around the world, and many of them are based on familiar characters from pop culture. Character toys and models are collected by people of all ages as a hobby or investment.

What types of cartoons are available as figures or models?

Cartoons are a popular source for celebrity and character models. Taking a two-dimensional cartoon subject and designing 3D model kits or characters is enjoyed by young and old alike. If there is a specific character from a particular show or time that you enjoy, it is likely that someone took the time to create a representation or plaything of it. Sources for cartoon subjects include:

  • Comic books: This includes famous heroes and villains from DC or Marvel.
  • Television shows: Characters from Scooby-Doo to SpongeBob SquarePants are available.
  • Movies: Includes 3D representations of subjects from the Lion King to Mickey Mouse.
  • Japanese animations: Character models from shows such as Akira or Mobile Suit Gundam.
  • Video games: 3D characters or models from games like Mortal Combat or Minecraft.
What kind of products is the character Godzilla available in?

Godzilla is one of the more popular characters imitated in figure or model kit form. He has been designed as a figure with various degrees of articulation that frees up his appendages for play or posing. Another popular medium Godzilla is found in is model kits. For more than 50 years, the giant reptile has been offered in plastic or resin from multiple manufacturers. These kits can offer hours of entertainment as they are built-up and painted. Finally, another medium he is found in is figure displays and statues. While toys and kits are a niche with collectors, these types of figures are designed specifically with collectors in mind.

Are glues, paints, and tools included free with model kits?

In most cases, they are not included with model kits. The character or model kit will include the parts needed to build it up, as well as decals and instructions. Everything else will need to be purchased separately. The exception to this rule is character or model kits designed for young children that snap together. They do not require glue and are often molded in colored plastic that will require no paint. At a minimum, you will want to consider the following items to help you finish building a kit:

  • Glue: Plastic glue for plastic or super-glue for resin.
  • Cutters: Cutters or nippers to remove parts from the runners they are attached to.
  • Hobby knife: Used to remove parts from runners or to trim flash from parts.
  • Files/sanders: Used to remove blemishes and to smooth out seams.
  • Paint: For airbrushing, hand-painting, or spraying colors with a can.
