Car and Truck Exhaust Pipes and Tips
Whether your car or truck's exhaust system is malfunctioning or you want to change the sound from your truck's exhaust pipes, a custom exhaust system can be an option. Your system can be modified not just for sound but to increase engine power or reduce air pollution. Mufflers or silencers can also be installed to reduce noise if your exhaust pipes are too loud. What size exhaust pipes does your car need?
The optimal size of your exhaust pipe will depend on the output of your engine. A higher engine output needs a larger exhaust pipe for maximum efficiency. It also depends on whether you have a single or dual exhaust.
- Engines ranging in size from 150 to 300 cubic inches with horsepower of 100 to 300 will typically need an exhaust pipe between 2 and 2.5 inches in diameter.
- Engine sizes of 300 to 400 and horsepower of 300 to 400 often use pipes that are 2.5 to 4 inches in diameter.
- Engines ranging from 400 to 500 in size with horsepower outputs of 400 to 500+ use a range of pipes from 3.5 to 4.5 inches.
Cars designed for racing often use straight pipe exhaust systems to improve the performance of the engine. The muffler is removed to enhance performance. This type of design is used for closed circuit racing. Typically, this system is used on specialty cars and trucks and is often made out of chrome. How do you measure for tips?
Tips can change the appearance or sound of the exhaust pipes on your car, such as creating a turbo sound. To ensure the tip fits, measure across the end of the pipe. Include the rims, or outer edges. The most common sizes for cars and trucks are 2.25, 2.5 and 3 inches in diameter. Purchase a tip with an inlet size that is the same diameter as your exhaust pipe.
Outlet size and length are also important. Outlet size is the diameter of the outer rim of the pipe. This is the most visible part. Length is how far the pipe extends from the truck's body. What other parts of the exhaust system can be modified?
In addition to the pipes and tips, several other parts of the exhaust system can be modified for performance, appearance, sound, and fuel efficiency. Common parts include:
- Catalytic converter
- Manifold or header
