About the Celine Big Bag

Founded by Céline Vipiana and her husband in the 1940s as a custom, made-to-measure children’s shoe company, the Celine brand has evolved into one of the most respected luxury accessories names. With handbags known for their minimalism and subtle branding, Celine has influenced fashion trends for decades.

When Phoebe Philo became Celine’s creative director in 2008, she embraced its commitment to simplicity and durability while ensuring it reflected the 21st century. Over a decade, she revitalized Celine by introducing luxurious though understated bags (such as its Luggage tote) and revamping classic Celine offerings (like the Box bag).

One of Philo’s final contributions as creative director was the Celine Big bag collection. Capitalizing on a larger handbag trend, they’re spacious, durable and elegant statement totes. The Big bag tote line was introduced in the Winter 2017 collection, featuring the medium and large Big bags. Later, in 2018, Celine added the small Big bag and the bucket bag to the series.

Materials and Craftsmanship of the Celine Big Bag

While the Big bag’s tenure was brief, its status as one of the final Phoebe Philo designs solidified it as a must-have legacy item. The large Big bag exemplifies Philo’s penchant for chic, minimalist designs but is a bag that makes itself known, nonetheless. Its broad, sturdy base and wide wings make it one of the largest luxury totes on the market. The Celine logo is delicately displayed on the bag’s front, near its base, and includes a single exterior zippered pocket. You can also loosely clasp its main compartment using the single buckled flap. Like a belt, a leather band loops through the flap and meets a simple buckle, allowing you to adjust the bag’s width. The brand lined the interior with suede and features an additional zippered pocket. The Large Big bag sports two handles allowing it to be comfortably worn on the shoulder or in the crook of the arm.

The Celine Medium Big bag is a slightly more modestly sized option, better suited for frequent travelers and commuters. Although its design closely mirrors its larger sibling, there are differences. For example, the Medium Big bag forgoes the front zippered pocket and opts instead for a simple, elegant exterior. Also, the only visible hardware on the bag is the subtle bucket at its closure.

The Small Big bag introduces another distinction—a long, attached strap, making it ideal for wearing as a crossbody. The most striking change to the line is the Bucket Big bag. While Celine designed its predecessors with an East/West orientation—meaning they are wider than they are tall—the Bucket option was designed as a North/South. Additionally, this compact style ditched the handles and opted for a long, inbuilt strap, making the Bucket Big bag only a shoulder or crossbody bag.

Celine produces its Big bags using its trademark supple calfskin leather, as well as smooth suede. The Small Big bag measures at 9.5” x 10” x 8” (width, height and depth), while the Medium Big bag comes in at 13” x 13” x 11”. As the line’s most spacious option, the dimensions of the Celine Large Big bag are 13” x 13” x 14”. The line’s most compact offering—the Bucket Big bag—measures 8” x 10” x 8”.

The Celine Big Bag Tote’s Value and Collectibility

Although Celine ultimately discontinued the Big bag, it remains popular among bag lovers and collectors worldwide. While the Big bag’s resale value varies based on size, material and overall condition, Celine enthusiasts will find that pre-loved medium-sized iterations fetch, on average, more than $24,2400 on the secondary marketplace.
