What to Consider When Buying a Laptop

A laptop is a great tool for handling your work projects or entertaining yourself at home, in the office, or when you are on the move. There is a wide array of laptops and notebooks, and to make the right choice, you will need to figure out your needs going by the features on offer. Apple MacBooks come in a variety of brands with special features that suit different users. The Apple MacBook Air, for example, is an affordable entry-level laptop.

What features should I look for in a MacBook Air?

  • Operating system (OS) - There are three common operating systems found on many laptops namely, Chrome OS, Mac OS, and Windows. Chrome OS appears only on dedicated Chromebooks while MacOS is a dedicated OS for MacBooks.
  • Laptop size - Laptops fall into different categories depending on the size of their display. The lower the size of the display, the smaller the laptop and the less it weighs.
  • Hard drive - Hard disk drives (HDDs) can have massive storage capacities compared to solid-state drives (SSDs). SSDs perform better than HDDs when it comes to speed. A PCIe –based flash storage device trumps the SATA-based connection when it comes to speed. The MacBook Air is available on 128GB SSD and 256GB SSD.
  • Display - The screen resolution controls the quality of the images displayed on the laptop. You will get the full high definition (HD) imaging on screens that run on 1920 x 1080 pixels.4K resolution is the highest level that you can achieve with some high-end laptops.
  • Connection ports - Universal connection ports allow you to use a wide array of devices and peripherals on the laptop. At the very basic, the PC should have a USB type-C connection port, an HDMI port for video, and a Thunderbolt 2 or Thunderbolt 3 port that is compatible with some USB-C connectors. The MacBook Air features two USB 3 ports, a Thunderbolt 2 port, an SDXC memory card slot, and support for Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connections.
  • Battery life - When you are constantly on the move, you will need a laptop that can run for an average of 8 hours on battery power.
  • Graphics - People who use a PC for gaming and graphics-intensive work, like 3D imaging and high-resolution video editing, will need an equally powerful graphics processing unit (GPU). The MacBook Air uses the Graphics 6000 Intel HD processor for this function.
  • Random access memory (RAM) - Try sticking to at least 4 GB Ram when you are working with a tight budget, while 8 GB is the ideal memory.

Why do I need to consider the processor?

The processor is the brains of the computer. A good processor is power-efficient and offers high clock speeds. Common processors that offer decent to high-speed performance include the Intel Core i3, Intel Core i5, and Intel Core i7. The Core i3 is a step down from the Intel Core i5, which is a step down from the Core i7. The 1.8 GHz Core i5 processor uses Turbo Boost technology, which ramps up its speed up to about 2.9 GHz. The processor unit has a 3 MB L3 cache memory. This memory helps the processor to pick up tasks quickly by fetching the next-in-line activities.
