Air Jordan 6

Inspiration for the Air Jordan VI design came from Michael Jordan's Porsche 911. The sports car's influence and aesthetic are found in the distinct molded heel tab of the shoe, which looks like the spoiler of a car. Other distinct features include a lace lock, molded ankle collar and translucent outsole-three elements that were first introduced on the Air Jordan 5.

Introduction to the
Air Jordan 6

Jordan 6 Black Infrared

Michael Jordan won his first NBA championship while wearing the Air Jordan 6. Designed by Tinker Hatfield and originally released in 1991, the Air Jordan 6 had five original colorways in its first run:

  • Black/Infrared
  • White/Carmine
  • White/Infrared
  • White/Maroon
  • White/Sport Blue

The original retail price on the AJ 6 was $125. It was revived in 2000 and brought back many times-in 2002, 2006, 2010, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020-through new retros and limited-edition collaborations.

Commercial Success of the Air Jordan 6

During the 1991 Playoffs, Jordan wore the Black/Infrared colorway. The sneakers were advertised through a series of black-and-white commercials featuring director Spike Lee as the character Mars Blackmon. One of these spots included Rock & Roll Hall of Fame musician Little Richard as a genie who turns Mars Blackmon into Michael Jordan. The NBA superstar also wore the White/Carmine colorway in a popular Gatorade commercial that introduced the "Like Mike" theme song.

Rappers and hip-hop artists have also embraced the Air Jordan 6. In 2004, Kanye West wore the Black/Infrared AJ 6 in his All Falls Down music video. Other musicians who have collaborated on the shoe include Travis Scott and Macklemore, the latter having an exclusive, limited quantity run created for friends and family that never got released at retail.

The AJ 6's molded TPU tongue proved a first for the signature sneaker line. Material makeups of the shoe were comprised of leather, nubuck and combinations of the two.

AJ 6 Retros Pay Colorful Tribute to the Legend

A slew of new colorways celebrated Michael Jordan's accomplishments:

Black/Metallic Gold from the 2006 Defining Moments Pack marked MJ's first and fourth NBA championships.

Jordan 6 DMP

The Jordan DMP pack from 2006 was the first time the Jordan Brand sold two retros together in one package. In 2020, the DMP Air Jordan 6 returned solo in the Black/Metallic Gold colorway.

Air Jordan 6 Rings

The Cigar and Champagne duo from 2014 was inspired by the locker room celebrations following NBA Championship games and featured a gold championship ring lace lock.

Jordan 6 White Maroon

The first official partnership between Air Jordan and Gatorade occurred in 2017, with the release of the AJ 6 in the sports drink company's iconic green and orange. This was accompanied by Gatorade x Jordan Brand apparel.

Air Jordan 6 Retro

Infrared, one of the more popular retro colorways, is synonymous with the Air Jordan 6 and has been used to accent a variety of colorways, including Iron Grey/Black, White/Natural Grey and White/Dark Concord.

The Collectability of Jordan 6

One of the most valuable Air Jordan 6 models is its 2019 collaboration with rapper Travis Scott. The sneaker comes in a Medium Olive Green colorway and features a stash pocket on the shoe's ankle collar. The Travis Scott x Air Jordan 6 retailed for $250 and features Infrared accents and "Nike Air" and "Cactus Jack" branding on the back.

Another premium version of the Air Jordan 6 is the Black/Dark Concord colorway that was created in collaboration with sneaker boutique Social Status. This distinct model features pony hair and faux reptilian material on the upper and retailed for $250.

In 2014, a pair of Air Jordan 6 styles inspired by the Japanese manga series, Slam Dunk, were released in limited numbers. The Varsity Red sneaker featured a number 10 stitched on the side to signify the manga's main character, Hanamichi Sakuragi, and also retailed for $250.
