Details to look for when buying a used Atari 2600

There are a few things you should pay close attention to when purchasing a preowned Atari 2600. First, make sure the system comes with a power cable, a video output cable, and at least one controller. If the system is missing at least one component, then you will need to buy it separately. Second, due to the age of the system, the condition of the Atari console can vary. If you are expecting it to be in working condition out of the box, then make sure it has been tested by the seller.

Recognizing the differences between the various vintage Atari game system models

Atari released several different versions of the 2600 over its lifespan. The easiest way to identify them is usually by the name and logo on the front of the system.

  • Atari Video Computer System: Originally known as the Atari VCS, this was the main model between 1977 and 1982. It has six switches on front although, in a later revision, two were moved to the back.
  • Atari 2600: Starting in 1982, Atari renamed the console to the Atari 2600 to distinguish it from the successor console, the Atari 5200. The first version of the Atari 2600 was made of all black plastic and featured four switches on front.
  • Sears Video Arcade: In 1977, Sears began producing the Video Arcade system under the Tele-Games brand. The system is similar to the Atari 2600 except for a few aesthetic differences. In 1983, Sears released a completely redesigned console called the Sears Video Arcade II, which was actually just the Japanese version of the 2600. It featured four controller ports, buttons in places of switches, and a wedge-shaped design.
  • Atari 2600 Jr.: Released in 1986, the Atari Jr. is a smaller, lighter version with an external design that resembles the Atari 7800, which has a metal strip across the middle.

Are there additional necessary accessories for the Atari 2600?

The Atari 2600 was originally designed to plug right into an RF box, which sends an audio and video signal directly to the television. If you are missing a workable RF box or you cannot find a way to connect the system to your television set, then one of the most common alternatives is a Coaxial to RCA adapter. This accessory is available on eBay.
