2.5" Internal Hard Disk Drives

The 2.5" disk drive is known by most people to be the hard drive that goes inside of a laptop. Although some older devices include an IDE interface, most of the drives on the market will have SATA connections. Depending on its age, you will find varieties of 2.5" storage drives with SATA I, II, or III connections with varying RPM speeds and internal caches.

Will a 2.5" hard drive work inside a Desktop computer?

A 2.5" hard drive will certainly work inside of a desktop computer as long as it has the appropriate SATA connectors. Since it offers a smaller size, mounting such drives in a full-size case may seem unusual, but it can be done with some modifications or custom mounting brackets. Solid state drives usually come in a 2.5-inch size, so it is not unusual to see them inside of modern computers.

Will older laptops fit a Serial ATA 2.5" hard drive?

Most older laptops will have IDE connections so that it is not compatible with SATA drives directly. On the other hand, there are some models that have proprietary adapters so that you can plug SATA drives into these older ports. It is also possible to purchase adapters in which you may swap the DVD drive for a secondary SATA disk.

What are the common RPM speeds of hard drives?

  • 5400 RPM: This is probably the most common speed found in laptop hard drives. This speed is just fast enough so that you will not miss any performance, yet it is quiet enough for a work laptop.
  • 7200 RPM: This is the typical speed of high-performance hard drives. This RPM is usually more desirable in desktops, but many portable laptops will have them as well.
  • 10,000 to 15,000 RPM: This speed is more typical of server hard drives or some gaming-oriented products. The VelociRaptor is one of the most notable brands of faster high-RPM storage products.

What capacity for a laptop or all-in-one computer is recommended?

There are a wide variety of capacities found in the hard disk market these days. A typical user would probably be unlikely to go beyond 250 GB in storage unless they are an avid collector of movies and video games. 1 TB is the safest bet as it is in the middle of being high-performance yet high-capacity. There are now disks that have the capacity of upwards of 2 TB, but these products typically require newer, more powerful machinery to run them.
