Nebraska first played college football in 1890. Nebraska was a founding member of the Big Six Conference where they stayed excluding a brief hiatus from 1918 to 1921. The Big Six became the Big 12 in 1996, after which Nebraska left to become part of the Big Ten Conference in July 2011.
Nebraska has the highest number of wins and the greatest winning percentage out of all NCAA football teams in the last 50 years. The Cornhuskers have won five national titles, claimed 43 conference championships and have five Heisman Trophy winners.

Memorial Stadium holds the record for the most consecutive sold out games: 311 since 1962. Packed with a Sea of Red shirts, 81,067 fans fill the stadium on game day, making it the third largest "city" in Nebraska.Built in 1923, the four corners of Memorial Stadium are inscribed with inspirational words for the team and memorials to fallen soldiers. In 1999, the stadium became the first Division I-A school to install FieldTurf. Nebraska also has the largest jumbo screen, called HuskerVision, of any college stadium in the nation. A $65 million expansion project is expected to be complete by 2013.
Nebraska Cornhusker Rivalries
With an all-time winning record of 837 games and the title of the fourth most victorious team in college football history, the Nebraska Cornhuskers have racked up several major enemies. When the two teams played under the Big Eight Conference, the Cornhuskers regularly competed against the University of Oklahoma Sooners for the league and national championship titles. In the Conference's history, the teams shared or won the championship 71 times.
The Cornhuskers also enjoyed a competitive rivalry with the University of Colorado Buffaloes while playing in the Big 12 Conference.
