The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) sponsors the sport of basketball at the Division I level at 345 schools located across the United States. Of those, 342 play in 32 conferences, and three are independent schools not affiliated with a conference. Champions of each of these leagues earn an automatic berth into the 68-team Championship except for the Great West Conference which just started playing with a 2010-11 campaign. Each conference determines its champion through a postseason tournament with the exception of the Ivy League. That league decides its champion solely through a 14-game round-robin regular season.

UCLA is the most-storied team in history, having won 11 NCAA titles. Ten of those were claimed between 1964 and 1975, while the most recent crown was brought home in 1995. Kentucky has the second-highest total of national titles with seven; the Wildcats most recently won a championship in 1998. Indiana and North Carolina have five crowns apiece, while Duke has won four titles.

The National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame is located in Kansas City, Mo. This newer facility opened in 2006 and had a significant class of nearly 200 inductees that year before 6-7 have been honored every year since. The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass., honors those who have contributed to basketball in general. Since opening in 1959, more than 300 individuals have been inducted from a variety of basketball backgrounds. The most notable award given to college basketball players is the Naismith College Player of the Year trophy. First awarded in 1969, Duke has seen its players claim the title seven times. Just two players have won it three times. UCLA’s Bill Walton did so in 1972, 1973 and 1974, while Ralph Sampson of Virginia earned the prestigious honor in 1981, 1982 and 1983.

Even though there is a large variety of teams throughout the country, attending a college basketball game anywhere is an exciting experience. At many schools, students stand the entire game and serve as the loudest and most energetic segment of fans.
