8 Pin PCI Express Computer Power Cables

How to Find the Right 8 Pin PCI Express Computer Power Cables

8 Pin PCI Express power cables are most commonly used for a Graphics Processing Unit (GPU), otherwise called a video/graphics card. These cables connect the GPU to the Power Source Unit (PSU). Most medium- to high-powered GPUs will need an 8 pin cable to power the unit.

Can you use 8-pin power cables with 6-pin PSU slots?

If your GPU has an 8-pin interface, you should not attempt to plug the power cable into a 6 pin power supply slot. The two sizes are incompatible. If you try to force the connector into the slot, you could damage the cable or the power supply. You will need to purchase an additional adapter that will safely connect the 8 pin cable with the 6 pin slot.

Can you plug 6-pin cable connectors into GPUs 8-pin slots?

Although it is physically possible to plug a 6 pin cable into an 8 pin slot, it will not function correctly. A 6-pin cable and an 8-pin cable have different wiring configurations. The 6-pin uses just two 12v wires and three grounds. An 8-pin wire uses three 12v wires and five grounds. There are also differences in the power output of each wire. The 6-pin connector produces a maximum of 75W, while the 8-pin is capable of 150W. A 6-pin cable will not transfer enough power to an 8-pin slot. In this case, youll need to use a suitable adapter.

What is a PCI Express cable?

A PCIe cable uses two internal wires to provide 12v power to a graphics card. This cable runs directly from the back of the GPU to the back of the power supply. A connector on both sides of the cable attaches it to a device. The cable is referred to as PCI Express because it provides power to a device in this slot. Alternatively, this type of cable may be referred to as a PCI Express cable, or PCI-E Graphics (PEG) cable. You may also use an adapter with these cables for compatibility with the connector.

A PCI-E cable may come in one of the following connector sizes:

  • 8 pin
  • 6 pin
  • 4 pin
  • Multi-pin units (can be used as 4, 6, or 8 pin)
Are male or female connectors needed for 8-pin PCIe cables?

These cables will usually be male-to-male. To confirm this is correct, you will need to inspect the back of the GPU and power supply. Each power connector on the cable should plug into the hole patterns on each device. Some systems may require a female-to-male connector. Therefore, it is important to check the headers on each device before purchasing a PCIe power cable. If you have the wrong type of power connector, you may need to buy an adapter.

What if your PSU doesnt have an 8 pin slot?

Some PSUs do not have any extra slots to provide power to peripheral devices. If your GPU requires a PCIe cable, the PSU may not be compatible. You will either have to switch the GPU or the PSU. There are some GPU models that draw power directly from the PCIe slot, and do not need additional cables.
