Brilliant, Brilliant Bloody Brilliant!!!I brought Torchwood Season One after watching a few episodes on the BBC America. If you love Doctor Who ( the new series) you will love Torchwood. It's a smart, sexy, and funny spin off of Doctor Who. Staring John Barrowman as Pan-sexual Captain Jack Harkness, the handsome quick witty , cocky and sexy leader of the band of torchwood. They are beyond the police outside the government and the United Nations. Their mission is to secure alien technology to arm the human race against the future.Although this is a series about aliens it's more about the human condition. Centering around Jack is the caring ex-cop Gwen Cooper, shag happy young doctor Owen Harper, lonely tech-smart Tashiko, and office manager eye candy Ianto Jones. This dvd is action packed. This dvd is not rated. If your not used to british tv, be warned there's girl on girl and guy on guy kissing if your shy about that type of stuff. If your a sci-fi fan you'll love every episode. Loaded with extra. It's a great addition to any dvd collection.
I'll start off by saying that this is the third occasion that I've tried to write a review on this product containing a season's worth of superior writing, acting, and character development. Certainly Torchwood's spell-checking capabilities wouldn't be bringing their computers to a crashing halt as eBay's utility continually does mine...
That's not to say that Torchwood doesn't have its own problems.
The characters are all human, to begin with. None are the typical Hollywood program stereotypes. Even considering Captain Jack's unique qualities, he's a hero out of no mold. Each member of the team is allowed to develop and grow as though they are new people that we've just met - which they are - and to make an assumption about any one of them is to make an egregious mistake. As thew show goes on, you start to care about these people.
The plots are all intelligently written. Don't go into a show and expect to guess the outcome. Yet they all contain sci-fi wizardry without the BS and action minus the overly used Matrix silliness. I.e., the shows are all both thoughtful and exciting at the same time.
This program is a spin-off of the greatest science fiction television show ever - Doctor Who, which I've been watching since the mid-70s. But it has its own personality, its own uniqueness, its own great team of writers, producers, actors, and production staff. It is a joy to watch, over and over again...
...which is, of course, why I bought the set.
The hours of intelligent, action filled entertainment, besides being simply a good watch, demonstrate what can be done within the sci-fi genre once one gets away from video-game inspired, old TV show inspired, and otherwise cliche inspired programming.
This is something you want to see. What Science Fiction can be at its best.
I am a fan of Dr Who, and some other Sci-Fi television shows.
This is a spin off of Dr Who, and follows Capt. Jack Harkness in his tenure at Torchwood, a super secret organization that deals with aliens, and their technology.
It is not like Dr Who, in that the content is more adult oriented and isn't as family friendly as Dr Who. The series explores darker sides of humanity.
The series is based in Cardiff, not London.
I think the acting is pretty good. John Barrowman is quite captivating as Capt. Jack, and the rest of the ensemble cast each hold their own.
This is a darker, more edgy series than Dr. Who. You will see more social boundaries crossed. This is more sex and violence. You will see people kiss the same sex on screen. Not all the stories are about aliens but most are. If you watched the series you saw the start of the idea of Torchwood. Queen Victoria started the organization to help arm Earth against alien invaders. They gather alien technology to help to fight in the future. Captain Jack Hardkness is the main character that runs the group. He is from the distant future and doesn't die easy. In the first show Policewoman Gwen Cooper joins the group. She shows the perspective of normal encountering this bizarre group. She can't help herself and investigates the group. This show has the 3 Hs: Heart, Humor and Horror. If you are a hard core Dr. Who fan, you might like this show.
I just saw the last several episodes of Torchwood, but i found it to be the best series on TV. John Barrowman is, well he's simply the best. Not only is he a terrific actor but he is also one handsome hunk. If he were to leave the show i would no longer be a viewer. Captain Jack is Torchwood, and Captain Jack could only be portrayed by John Barrowman. I cannot understand why it is not publized more. I have also become interested in "If I Can Dream", which has John Barrowman on it's panel. It is a lot like "American Idol." I would recommend watching Torchwood to anyone who likes sci-fi. Maybe they will have a vampire on the show since vampires are hot right now. You never know what will show up on Torchwood. And try out "If I Can Dream". Both series are on BBCA network.
This is an excellent Bristish telelvision show. I brought it for John Barrowman who plays Captain Jack Harkness and for Gareth David-Lloyd who plays Ianto Jones. This collection of dvd is the best!
When I first started watching Torchwood Season One when it was broadcast I didn't get it because I had never seen the revamped Dr Who so much of the back story was lost on me and I quit watching after just a few episodes. But now, after becoming a Whovian, I get it. Seasons two and three are often played on BBC America but I have yet to see season one which is why I purchased the box set. I love that, like Dr Who, Torchwood is a character driven show with engrossing story lines that delve into the personalities of the characters. You get to know the members of the Torchwood team and their motivations for doing what they do and you really miss them when they die (oh yeah, spoiler alert!) There are strong female characters that actually take part in the stories and are more than just eye candy or a love interest. Speaking of love interest, homophobes need not apply because there is an abundance of dude on dude smooching. Capt. Jack swings both ways and one of the other guys at Torchwood is gay so, if that aspect of the story bothers you, then watch something else. I felt that it was an integral part of the story and wasn't bothered at all by it. Besides, Jack is kind of dreamy. In summary, Torchwood is good to watch on the heels of the new Dr Who series and might stand on its own although I had trouble following the premise (Torchwood is an anagram of Doctor Who by the way) without a background in the Whoverse. It is well written with comedy, intrigue, love, heartache, and good ole bad ass aliens.
I'm a big fan of the the new Dr Who series and of all the Captain Jack appearences. So I decided to try the Torchwood series and I was not disappointed. It is more edgy and adult oriented than Dr Who but it is very entertaining. I enjoyed all the episodes leading up to a great season finale. I would highly recommend to anyone who enjoys Dr Who or good science fiction.
If you're a fan of Doctor Who through the BBC you are going to LOVE this show as well. Capt Jack first appeared in season 2 of Doctor Who, but then went on to do a spin off. In this show all the aliens appear on Earth and it is up to Capt Jack and his team (a small team of the group Torchwood) to save the Earth from these aliens when the Doctor is not around. I bought it because I love the show and have been slowly collecting the various spin offs of the Doctor Who series.
It only took one episode of this show to win me over completely. It moves fast and pulls no punches. They aren't affraid to offend or hurt a feeling by killing off a character or putting them in an awkward, uncomfortable situation. It's drama without the wimpiness and wailing that most American dramas seem to include. Issues are not wrapped up nicely at the end of the show. The characters represent real people; flawed and scared but not willing to back down from livng. Maybe it's that British "stiff upper lip" we've heard so much about over here. Some face their fears head on and some hide. As for the writing... Russel T. Davies is off the hook.(That means fantastic) The subject matter is usually brilliant. The actors are very good and don't seem to let the fact that they're on a TV show get in the way of their lives. There really is nothing that I don't love about it.
