Sony SDM-P234/B - Perfect as Dual Monitors

I have 2 of the Sony 23” monitors (model number SDM-P234/B and run them together with DVI connections.

My eyes are sensitive to the nuances of color displays. Sure many LCDs offer shocking realism with bright and very sharp displays. But try using them for Internet or marketing communication type work where you stare at images and text for hours on end.

I have a newer HP 24” monitor that is hard to watch as it is so bright. Trying many of the adjustments just do not make it an easy monitor to watch for long periods of time.

I find that the Sony offers me almost 40” of linear viewing that is easy on the eyes yet very clear. I can have my graphics programs open as well as MS Word and Publish swapping text and pictures back and forth. No longer do I get lost or waste time using alt-tab trying to find the information that I need.

Please not that I am not a gamer so there is no experience to comment on.

I believe that Apple uses this panel as well. And their monitor costs a lot more.

The Sony is very well made and weighs a solid 17 pounds. The frame is matt black and thin so that placing screens together is easy. I notice that some of the newer displays are lighter and do not feel as solid.

Running two monitors I notice no measureable power draw from my UPS Kw display meter.

Note that the Sony monitors do not have integral speakers. I have Sony external speakers and I find that most integral speakers are of no use.

There is no height adjustment but that does not seem to be an issue with my application.

If you are looking for a solid monitor for viewing text and graphics over long periods of time, I could not more highly suggest a monitor other than the Sony SDM-P234/b.

Review: Sony SDM-P234/B 23 inch LCD Monitor

Few available on used market, so value is inflated. True use value for undamaged and 100% functioning is $125-$150 in 2010. Biggest deficiency is this monitor's contrast rating, quite passe by now. Monitor lacks density. Blacks are not very. Pink fringing can be dealt with: careful color adjustment, and limit viewer's angled view. Good color in about 90 degrees only, not the wider angle advertised. Even after careful adjustments, not a good choice for making color adjustments in picture editing programs. Good choice for casual viewing from mixed sources. Expect to invest in an external switchbox if you have multiple input sources. Monitor itself functions beautifully, and the Sony monitor menu is easy enough to use, controls most of what you will want to adjust. Puts out a lot of heat, so probably not very energy efficient by 2010 standards. Need minimum of 2" above monitor unobstructed, otherwise, heat buildup will likely damage the monitor in short time. No problems with Mac OS in multiple monitor setup. A handsome monitor. Rating given is average, though there are some excellent attributes and some disappointing ones. A good old tech choice, if you can find one.Read full review...
