I have been looking for an "older" mini-dv type camcorder for sometime now. It appears through some research that these type of camcorders with the firewire output are the only ones that can be used to stream live video for use as a webcam.
This little Sony does the trick. It's output through the firewire port is instantly recognized by my MacBook Pro through various software (iMovie, Firefox, Skype, Photo Booth, etc). It also has a touch screen and its zoom is very fast and quite smooth.
If you can find this or a similar model from a few years ago, you won't be disappointed.
This handy, excellent camcorder can handle most of the work done by armature, even polished recorders. The size is perfect, even sexy. You can easily slide it into a small bag or pocketbook and you are good to go. It uses mini cassettes, which can be easy to carry. The only downside is that this kind of technology is rapidly being swept under the carpet. I recommend it for starters.
