Little Phone Does Big Job

I decided recently to take advantage of Straight Talk Wireless' new plan in which I could provide my own AT&T or T-Mobile phone and use the Straight Talk SIM card. I felt this would speed up my data access. I was blindly looking on ebay for a used phone so that my up front expense would be low. I found the TM506 for around $20 and decided to take the plunge.

My first impression was very favorable. The phone arrived in nearly new condition -- a big plus. And since Straight Talk gave pretty good instructions guiding me through the setup procedure, it didn't take long before I was up and running.

The really favorable impressions came shortly after when my local ISP went down for several days. I discovered that the TM506 could be tethered to my laptop computer to give me internet access. I must say, I have been very impressed how well that little phone has done providing me a solid internet connection at acceptable speeds. I'll have to confess that it was a bit rocky at times while I explored this new tech world, but you can bet this little phone has already paid for itself in my mind.

As far as phones go, it is a flip phone, and that dates it a bit, but I still find that a convenient style when it comes to answering and talking. Understand, too, that I never owned one of the newer qwerty keyboard phones, so texting on this phone is about what I m used to. Also understand that I bought the phone to use as a phone and not as a camera. That said, the camera takes reasonably good pictures. If I want really good pictures, I have another device for that, but if I want to send a quick vacation message, this works really well.

As I said, the data access alone has been wonderful, especially at times when I need to use it to access the internet by tethering to my PC. All things being considered I am very happy with the TM506.

Easy to use

I've had this phone for about 2 years and I'm satisfied.
I'm not into picture-taking, web-browsing, game-playing, ring-tones, or any of those new technologies, so I have no comments about that. I just use my phone for what a phone was made for: making and receiving calls.
The reception is good, but it could be better: as soon as I enter my kid's school (even in the lobby!) the signal is gone; the same happens inside a building or a basement.
I just used the camera once to take a picture of my baby son and put it as the wallpaper, it looks good.
Since I keep it inside my purse most of the time and it has been dropped several times, the screen is now scratched and scuffed. The joystick gets stuck when scrolling up a list, I don't know if because of the drops or age of the phone.
What I love most is the phone book: you can add 3 numbers and e-mail address for every contatc, and each is assigned an icon for home, mobile or work. That makes it easy to recognize who's calling and from where.
Right now it's not charging, don't know what happened. Bought a new battery, but didn't work. Maybe should buy a new charger, or better a new phone.
I've read other reviews and it's really hard to choose. All I want is a phone that has good reception.

Great Phone -- funky connections

I really like this phone! It has a great camera, nice sound, easy to use. Lots of great features. But not quite perfect. Hate that stupid non-standard charging jack! Have to buy all new chargers, data cables and stuff. Also have to buy new memory card because it doesn't use the same as my old phone. But despite that, I've tried several phones and I like this one best. Guess you can't have everything!Read full review...

Sony Ericsson Tm506 (Eric, A-)

With work, I'm constantly on the go. My old phone felt like it was clogging up my pocket. This phone is incrediblly light weight. One feature I was disappointed in was the alarm clock. It doesn't have a feature where you can play your song in full before shutting off, even though the phone has an mp3 player. One awesome feature is that I have full access to my phone while on the phone. I can send messages, make phone calls, even set the alarm if I wanted to. The graphics are great, and I can actually hear my friends (of whom are on the sprint network) on the new 3g network. I give this phone a A-.Read full review...

just needs a standard charger and SD card then it'll be almost perfect flip

even though this is a old model phone it's still a very good phone especially considering that's it's a flip phone, it has 3g on it so internet (if you have it) is reasonably fast and does not feel slow at all, but of course this comes from a time when Sony Ericsson wanted to do everything propitiatory, so it does not take standard SD cards and it's charger is this weird clip thing. would be one of the best cheap phones you could get if only you can get a standard SD card slot and mini usb charger, but it's very usable and you can get one for pretty cheap these days so it's not such a big deal, but it's something worth considering if your planning on buying this phone.Read full review...

one of the prblems in the phone are the little capacity who has only 2Mb, today the phone uses MMC and SD cards, and the phones storage 64, 124,512 and 1Gb this is a problem whit this, another problem is the poor resolution of the camera, in your time are fantastic but right now you have to take in a very good conditios of light to teke a good oicture, and another problem whit the phone is this dont have mp3 capacity only pholyphonic, in your time the mp3 rigntones dont exist, i consider this a very, very big problem today.

a "so, so" cell phone

What's nice:
1. flat streamline styling making it attractive and very easy and comfortable to carry in a pocket or purse.
2. screen size... larger than what I'm used to, well lit and very easy to read.
3. excellent sound volume range.
3. lovely color (scarlet).
4. loads of capabilities and options... more than I'll ever use.

What's disappointing:
1. battery seems to drain way too quickly.
I usually go days without using my phone and the infrequent times that I do use it (maybe twice a week)... the battery charge shows about a 15% or more charge loss.
2. sound quality is lacking in clarity. voices sound muffled for both incoming and outgoing conversations.
3. connector for charger is exposed... I would have preferred that it had a protective cover similar to the one that's over the memory card slot.
4. backlight on on display screen cuts out too soon (20 seconds if you don't push a button). and, there's no setting to keep the light on longer... but, then maybe it's a built in way to conserve on a battery that already doesn't hold a good charge.

I got mine free with a 2 year contract extension and rebate; so, I'm not out any money. But, I wouldn't pay full or even half price for this phone. And, I'll definitely be replacing this when my contract expires in 2 years... maybe, sooner if the battery doesn't hold up.

Sony Ericsson Equinox (T-Mobile)

I bought this phone for my teenage daughter. She loves the blue color and having the camera is an added bonus. It's a nice size and the screen is fairly large. I also bought one of these awhile back for my son in the black color. They both like their phones and I would recommend this particular phone to others. We were told at the T-mobile shop that they would recommend that we purchase one of the other phones of higher quality, but this is the one that my son wanted and the price was in the range that I was willing to pay. I do not regret my decision to go with these phones.Read full review...

Equinox simple but good

Purchased this item for my mom who is not too tech savvy, but needed a phone that can get reception in a hillside area. This phone provided all the simple features of an older phone she was used to, but offered newer features and better graphics and most importantly, ability to get reception on the 3G network. It's a decent buy for someone who doesn't text or use the internet functions all day everyday.Read full review...

GOOD-
It can be used as a tether modem on t-mobiles $5.99 tzones and it's fast.
Can be unlocked easy and free with a quick google search.
Takes good pictures. Video looks ok played back on phone
Good battery life.
Hackable.
Can take being dropped better then a lot of other phones.
Pretty Loud speaker for music and loud ringtones.

BAD-
The hinge is kinda weak but if treated right will last the life of the phone
Its kind of slow with the T-Mobile firmware and themes
Audio out and the charger plugs to the same plug so no headphones or wired earpeace while charging.
