I never had an interest in watching this movie. It wasn't until I heard "Colors of the Wind" on the Disney Princess Collection CD that I decided to watch it with my three year old. My daughter enjoyed the movie, but I loved it even more. The music is beautiful, and Judy Kuhn's voice is amazing. Mel Gibson also sings a song with Kuhn, "If I Never Knew You" and I thought his voice was pretty amazing too. This movie strays from some of the historical facts/legends of the real Pocahontas, but who cares. Most of us would probably be bored and depressed if the true story of Pocahontas was told in this movie. This is a beautiful love story of two people from two-different worlds who meet under unfortunate circumstances. And the ending isn't predictable like all the other Disney happily-ever-after movies which makes this movie even more heart-felt and intriguing. I also felt Disney did a wonderful job in sending a message to our children about respecting the land that we have been blessed with. Although some see the portrayal of the greedy settlers as racism (which really it was only one governor in the story who was greedy), I saw it as a lesson for us not to take nature and our surroundings for granted.
The animals in the movie were cute and entertaining for the youngsters; but the story itself is for adults and was beautifully told in a Disney kind-of-magical-way.
And for those who are thinking of buying Pocahontas 2: Journey to A New World... I enjoyed Pocahontas 2: Journey to A New World. Although it got a lot of bad reviews, I thought it was worth adding to my Disney collection. You get most of the original characters (minus Mel Gibson as John Smith), and Judy Kuhn again sings beautifully in the movie. I think a lot of people are disappointed with the ending, which historically is the path that Pocahontas does choose....I don't want to spoil it for those who haven't seen it. Needless to say, it doesn't quite measure up to the original Pocahontas but I thought it was interesting to find out what happens to Pocahontas and John Smith. Younger children will absolutely love part 2 because the story involves Meeko and Percy quite a bit, and they are pretty quirky!
One of the best Disney animated films ever! That said, it has no real basis in historical fact and is very sad! It also is not really a children's movie but more of a pre-teen to teenager movie given the storyline. Still, if you watch the film with an open mind it is excellent in every respect. It is very carefully drawn, the music is excellent, and the script is fast paced and involving. There was never a slow moment in this film and I was wanting more when the movie was over. If you like the ideal love presented in this movie with the maybe someday cliff-hanger, DO NOT watch Pocahontas 2; just stick with this one and dream your own ending. This is an Awesome movie with a positive, strong female role model and presentation of Native American Indians. Since my family is part Native American, this was especially an important film to me and to my family.
It has lots of star power, Mel Gibson, Christian Bale, Linda Hunt, Russell Means. It was well commended, Russell Means felt the Native Americans were finally truthfully represented.
The music was amazing. The Colors of the Wind won Academy Award, as did film for Best Musical or Comedy Score Mel Gibson has beautiful song, that got cut from theater version because true love declaration inconsistent with sequel plot
Plot is cartoonish, but it is a cartoon. Doesn't claim to be historically accurate, Pocahontas was somewhere between 10 & 14 yrs old, not a young woman, heroic act of shielding John Smith was first time she saw him, cartoon has them courting for some time. But it is a really beautiful, fun movie. My 9 yr old grandson was watching his own DVD,saw over my shoulder but got engrossed & demanded I get him Pocahontas II tomorrow but he found it on Netflix
This is one of the Disney films that didn't play as huge of a part in my childhood because I found it hard to relate to but I picked it up not out of interest for the film's composer, Alan Menken, and not only did I find a music score that can dig into my soul and give me goosebumps like most other films can't, but it also delivered a strong moral message and the film re-assures us that animation can still be created at as high of a quality as some of Hollywood's most notable films.
Love this movie and the music. Very entertaining for young and old alike. Mel Gibson plays "John Smith." It may be one of the few times you actually hear Mel sing!! Not Bad!! You won't be sorry for owning this DVD. Great story, We love it!!
Pocahontas is a great disney classic to own for your Disney movie collection. The 2-disc set takes you more into the making of the movie, and has alots of added features as well an added song "If I never knew you" in the feature film. This movies goes for about $50 anywhere you look so getting it on ebay is your best bet. :) I would definately recommend it to anyone!
Pocahontas is such a wonderful movie for any little girl! My 3 year old watched it and instantly fell in love with it. I'd have to say this is one of Disney's finest movies. Such a beautiful story! I'm even happy to watch it with her over and over again!
Pocahontas is an excellent movie to help young children learn about life in America when the first settlers arrived. It helps them understand and appreciate nature through Pocahontas' life. My four year old granddaughter has watched it daily and has a new appreciation for the American Indian.
Pocahontas is one of the better Disney "Princess" motion-pictures as she is based on an actual person, the native American girl featured in the story of Jamestown, Virginia, one of our country's early towns. It is even better than I remembered and the special features are fun to watch also and lend a greater respect of the film after watching.
