I'm an advanced amateur photographer shooting landscapes, nature, animals, fast cars and faster jets. I've owned Nikon DSLR's and lenses for the past five years, always upgrading as I make new purchases. I use a Nikon D300 camera body. I bought this lens to replace the Nikon 18-200mm, even though I gave up some range on the low end. As soon as I opened the box I could tell by the weight and feel of it that it is a high quality lens. I started taking a variety of shots of my dogs, inside, outside, and in a park. I was very happy with the results - even my wife complimented me on the pictures which is hard to come by. I used it last night, in the dark, zoomed all the way out to take a few shots at an outdoor symphony concert, with the ISO set at 3200. I didn't use a tripod since there wasn't room; I handheld it so I didn't expect good results. I'm amazed at the sharpness of the images. The VR II works as advertised too. Today I took it out to run it through a few comparison shots to see how well it works under nature/landscape settings on a tripod and handheld. I also took some images to merge into HDR images. The results were crystal clear and exceptionally fast set at ISO 200, even zoomed out to the max. Although it weights more than the Nikon 18-200mm lens, it's a fair exchange for the speed, reach, and clarity that result. I'm planning out my weekends around using this lens at a NASCAR race, air show, and fall foliage in the Shenandoah Valley. This lens is well worth the price; I highly recommend it.
I brought this lens because I am getting tired of carrying two or three big heavy lenses when I go on long hikes or walking in a crowd. This is the perfect travel lens for Nikon FX cameras. It is light weight with a wonderful range and outstanding optics. I love the fact I can use all my 77mm filters on this one. My only complaint is with the speed. A F/2.8-4 would be ideal. At less than $1000 you just can't go wrong with this one.
I really like this lens so far. It is far superior to my 18-200mm as I am using this lens on a DX body. Images are much sharper and the lens is very sturdy all around. I really like that it has no lens creep. FX shooters love the versatility, and although it sacrifices a bit of image quality the zoom range is well worth it. For my D7000 I get a great telephoto lens that is cropped to remove the corners of the image, where most problems occur with lenses anyways. However I would not recommend this lens if you are a DX shooter and don't have a wide angle DX to supplement your collection. The only drawback of this lens is the weight which is just under what a more professional heavy lens weighs. But other than that I really do love it.

I use the lens mounted to a Nikon D700.
This is a fantastic all purpose lens for Nikon's full frame 35mm or FX Format digital cameras. The ability to zoom from 28mm to 300mm and carry just one lens (for the most part) is an outstanding asset.
Really the only downside to this lens is the relatively slow maximum aperture. However with a moderate amount of natural light (or a higher ISO or a flash in very dark situations) it performs flawlessly.
This is a great lens if you are looking for one lens that can go from taking photos in a small room to something far away outside. With the VR (vibration reduction) and good technique, it's easy to hand hold in low light and still have a slow enough shutter speed. This is my choice for a vacation lens as well, so I don't have to change lenses or carry too much with me.
I am using it withbmy Nikon D 7000. It's really an amazing lens. It does everything. It's really good for travellers. It's size and appearance give a nice look to your camera.
The picture is really sharp and clear.
It may not be that good in the dark places . But i solved that problem too. By using SB-700 flash.
Iam satisfied with this lens and i suggested it to a friend.
The lens was new as indicated with a warranty. The price was great and fast shipping. The Nikon 28-300mm lens is a good travel photography lens. You only need to carry one lens to cover your wide angle and telephoto shot. It stays on my Nikon D700 except for weddings and other events.
Wow what a nice lense. This is the first piece of Nikon glass I've bought and am really impressed with the sharpness, the spot on focusing even in low light and I can't believe how quiet it is. Would recommend 100%.
My original thought was that this lens would save me from carrying several other lenses. This is the biggest virtue of owning this lens, but I didn't count on the quality of the photos to be so good, even at the limits. In addition, I have a D7000, so I can get even more out of the lens. Don't hesitate to purchase this lens, don't let the f/3.5 stop you!!
