This camera is pretty cool for every day use and does what is expected from it. It comes with software to make really neat panorama shots, it has different modes for different applications, (portraits, landscapes, close-ups etc.) It's pretty easy to figure out and use once you read all the instructions and get it down, and the pictures come out nice as well. The only drawback is probably that it doesn't come with a battery charger, (it uses 2 AA's, rechargable or regular ones) but over all it's a pretty nice gadget for the money. I've had it a few months now, have taken tons of pictures and am satisfied with my purchase. Good camera, the 12 megapixel makes clear detailed pictures. I purchased an extended 2 year warranty with it just in case, but sofar so good.
I purchased this little camera for a gift to my non technical girlfriend, since she was using her 2 mpx cellphone camera to capture family events resulting in poor focused, high noise pictures. This camera has a nice output considering it´s small sensor, noise is usually well controlled under good light and the weak flash serves the purpose of controlling motion on normal portrait pics.
The reported 41mm-145mm (3.6x zoom) focal length of the lens is not very wide so you need to get some distance to photography groups; the 145mm seems really good but you need a sunny day and shoot outside if you plan on handholding the camera.
Nikon says it´s got a vibration reduction feature but its digital, I wasn´t able to test it but usually digital stabilization is useless.
The ISO seems to go up to 1600 but it can´t be controlled directly which I found upsetting since my Olympus X-20 features a Program mode where you can control that. Nikon offers not 1 but 2 "intelligent" modes for full auto mode picture taking, don´t know why 2 or their differences but anyway, there´s also many scene settings which I find nice but a total novice like my girlfriend may find overwhelming I think.
Overall is a good camera for the price, but restricted to general snapshot taking = not serious photography as is usual in its price range.
I enjoy the smaller size compared to my 1980 model Canon AE-1. It doesn't seem to have the control features that I hoped it would, but I'm early in the process of using this device, so there is probably MUCH to learn given it's from Nikon.
Test photos taken so far have been very good. I'm not going to be using this for any serious photography so it's going to almost perfect for what I plan on using it for.
I do wish it had come with the full instruction manual as a physical book as opposed to a disc. I use a computer all day long at work so I choose not to have one at home. This makes the disc reference cumbersome for me PLUS you can't reference a disc when you're in the field.
Ergonomics as far as shutter placement and function, position of various buttons on the camera body, etc. are excellent. NOTE: if you have large hands and fingers, you may not enjoy using this camera or any other of its size for that matter.
like the slimness and light weigth, pitures are ok, could be a little sharper. Battery life is great and stores a ton of pics. I like Nikon over other brands. If I was to buy another camera, I'd purchase the next model up......overall, ok for the price.
