Linksys WRT610N

The Pros:
The connectivity is reliable. The signal strength is good (on the 2.4 Ghz band, but not on the 5Ghz band). The web interface is easy to use. I hooked up an external hard drive to the USB port and turned on the media server. That worked nice. I like the Wireless N capability although I am only getting 144 Mbs speeds. Its very sleek looking. I like that it has wired Gigabit performance.

The Cons:
The 5Ghz band put out a very weak signal. So bad that I am not using it. That was very disapointing. While in N-mode on the 2.4Ghz band I am only getting 144 Mbs speed. I am not sure if this is my problem or the routers problem. I am still working it out.

Excellent Router for the Advance User

This router is great for gaming and setting up multiple wireless devices, but it is a bit over priced for the basic network user. I upgraded my network from a Linksys WRT150N router, thinking that this would be a major improvement. I was wrong. The WRT610N router did give me a stronger signal strengths, but unless you have an wireless N adapter on every device you are connecting to your network; you will not be able to fully utilize the dual frequency technology. So keep it simple, if your not an advid online gamer or don't have multiple wireless N devices, then stick with a more inexpensive model, like the Linksys E1000 or the DLink DIR615. Both of these routers work well for simplified wireless connectivity. Since making this purchase and getting a great price for the WRT610N, I personally decided to invest in the DIR615 to compare. I found that the DIR615 is comparable to the WRT610N in simply wireless networking. So you can spend $100 on the WRT610N or $40 on the DIR615. You pick. In closing, Linksys and DLink are the best. You can't go wrong with either one, you just might pay more for the Linksys.Read full review...

Best in Linksys August 2009 Wirless N Router w/storage

I have been waiting for something like this. The Linksys WRT610 Wireless Router with the range, dual simultaneous radio bands. The kids & family and friends can play the PlayStation, Xbox 360, PsP, and have multiple computers running accessing the hard drive on the router. While I Jacek can be just about anywhere around the house, back yard on my lap top barbecuing n sipping on a drink. While being productive without getting slowed bogged down and the range is great. Thanks Linksys

Technical Details

* Internet-sharing Router and 4-port Gigabit Switch, with a built-in, dual-band, speed and range enhanced Wireless Access Point
* Two simultaneous, separate, radio bands double your available bandwidth
* MIMO technology uses multiple radios per band to create robust signals for maximum range and speed, with reduced dead spots
* Connect a hard drive or flash-based USB storage device to allow access to your music, video, or data files from within your network

Product Description
From the Manufacturer

The Dual-Band Wireless-N Gigabit Router is really four devices in one box. First, there's the dual-band Wireless Access Point, which lets you connect to the network without wires. There's also a built-in 4-port full-duplex 10/100/1000 Switch to connect your wired-Ethernet devices together at up to gigabit speeds. The Router function ties it all together and lets your whole network share a high-speed cable or DSL Internet connection.
We've also included a Storage Link that lets you easily add gigabytes of storage space onto your network using readily available USB 2.0 hard drives--or plug in a USB flash disk for a convenient way to access your portable data files. The built-in Media Server streams music, video, and photos from the attached storage device to any UPnP compatible media adapter. And you can get to your files from anywhere in the world through the Internet.

The Access Point built into the Router uses a dual-band version of the very latest wireless networking technology, Wireless-N (draft 802.11n). By overlaying the signals of multiple radios for each band, Wireless-N's "Multiple In, Multiple Out" (MIMO) technology multiplies the effective data rate. Unlike ordinary wireless networking technologies that are confused by signal reflections, MIMO actually uses these reflections to increase the range and reduce "dead spots" in the wireless coverage area. The robust signals travel farther, maintaining wireless connections much farther than standard Wireless-G.

With Wireless-N, the farther away you are, the more speed advantage you get. It works great with standard Wireless-G, -A, and -B equipment, but when both ends of the wireless link are Wireless-N, the router can increase the throughput even more by using twice as much radio band, yielding speeds much faster than standard Wireless-G. But unlike other speed-enhanced technologies, Wireless-N can dynamically enable this double-speed mode for Wireless-N devices, while still connecting to other wireless devices at their respective fastest speeds. In congested areas, the "good neighbor" mode ensures that the Router checks for other wireless devices in the area before gobbling up the radio band.

Nice Router For The Home Etc...

I bought this router as a refurbished Linksys product here on E-Bay and it was a very good deal.

I had read reviews of the WRT610N that were both favorable and unfavorable so I thought with a price this good I would give it a try in my home network setup.

My router is mounted under the staircase to my basement using the very handy built in wall mounting slots and a couple of wood screws. One of the negatives I had read about was hot running. After a week of moderate to heavy use transferring files around between computers and streaming Netflix I checked the temperature of the device using an IR temp gun and the hottest spot that I could find on the face was about 95 degrees in a 70 degree room. I didn't think this was bad and I wonder if the vertical mounting helps with this issue?

I'm running DD-WRT firmware on the router and I'm using the 5Ghz band to stream to my Roku XD/S box with the 2.4Ghz band handling everything else(about 10 mixed devices, G and N). The wireless range/coverage is very good everywhere in my house, upstairs, downstairs and out in the yard. Over the years I've tested a lot of different routers at my house including WRT54G, DIR-655, WGR614 and WRT320N all of which gave similar wireless range performance in my setting. The WRT610N seems to perform similarly, very good.

It will be interesting to see how things go with this box as time goes by but I've had good luck from all routers that I've tested here(except for the DIR-655 which had firmware issues that hurt reliability as a router tho not as a wireless AP). Even if it only lasts for a year or two I'll get my $66.99 worth.

GOOD ROUTER

This is a good router. I purchased it with the intention of using the USB port as a print server. Unfortunately it did not work. The setup instructions were not very good. Setup software could not detect a internet connection at first. But I continued with the setup wizard and re-booted my router and modem. Then everything came together. It has been running for about a week now without any problems. The "Network Magic" software that came with it is only a 7 day trial for the pro version. That pissed me off! But I liked it so much I paid for it anyway.Read full review...

antenna upgrades of linksys/other dual wireless brouter

be very careful and cautious of these ebay sellers stating that for these wireless routers you only need to plug and play these dual 5.0/2.4ghz wirless routers. Because thats not the case!!!

Some of these con kids or old men scams don't tell the full story! When you upgrade these antennas with the appropriated u.fl connectors that don't require soldering and minor-mini welding; these ebay sellers forget to mention or hide that these antenna fixture only applies to the 5.0hz range. That is why the range is still poor after the upgrade on the 5.0 ghz range(in addition you need ohter hardwares). But the 2.4gh range is still poor!

Unless, you have desoldered and soldered carefully 2.4ghz connectors in the right work environment. And this can dangerous and costly! so take care when these kids and adults are trying to scam a story on ebay or craig's list or whereever!

Goto a certified technician to have it done properly. i would never trust someone who is just wing'in it! i.e; would you trust a kid or an adult's word that they are medically capable of vertebrae disc replacements? Electrical engineering certification are no more different than a medical degree execept that some EE occupations can be extremely difficult!

the dd-wrt is not recommended; its way to buggy and basically identical to most OEM's. moreover, the pwer output and cloaking features and various security do not work effectively. in its infantile beta forms, dd-wrt is not recommneded to anyone who not in the technical field and/or IT field. so don't blame the brouter or software if you are trying to be savvy!

Linksys Swingsys

Stay away from this unit. Indeed it works in dual band (2.4 & 5.0) however the range for the 5.0GHz is useless unless you are in same room as the router. With in 15 ft it will deliver 270+ MBPS. Anything beyond 15 ft and your connection speed plumets to less than what G standard delivers. The web interface is rather weak as well. There is no improvmemt to speak of over G seris routers from 4 years ago. The NAS option would be nice if a person with a CS degree could get it to work in less than 15 minutes. Way to complicated for what it does. In short this router is a waste of money. The N standard is not fully adopted and in current form the performance is simply unacceptable. If you really happen to be hard up and need a router stick to the G series as they provide acceptable value for their performance. The WRT610N sonds good on paper but fails to deliver.Read full review...

for what i paid. it is a decent router

it has to much security. my epad is not able to connect to it. the range is good. could be better.
I love the style of this product. It looks sleep and even better looking when you have it in your hands. UsB port is handy. dont know what it is for . 4 port ethernet is a plus since my epad does not connect to the WEP2 setting they have. Other than that... i might have to buy a new tablet for myself just to read the encryption. it is still a good router. USE NEW PRODUCTS FOR THIS ROUTER OLD COMPUTERS MIGHT HAVE A PROBLEM.Read full review...

This is a great router

I used to have a belkin router, I would always get disconnected from my xbox games, and I would have trouble connecting to most of my friends. But this linksys router helped me in everyway possible. I can play anything I want, whenever, with whoever, without any worry, also it increased my internet speed a lot. The 5ghz is great for streaming video and music. Great buy, id recommend it to anyone.Read full review...

Great product. Used the CD and evrything was done.

Cisco is one of top two. I had a WRT45G and was working fine. Here and there lost connection, But always worked fine and recently decide to upgrade to new N series. There is not much different from new E-3000. I did not find any.It works fine and I'm happy that I purchased that. One thing I do not forgive and forget is that I called Cisco support and help to ask them the simple question about my WRT45G, Unfortunately, I could not believe it, They wanted me to pay $29.99 to ask them any thing about my WRT45G. My system was running fine and just had a question, as the courtesy to customers at list ask them what their question is about, before asking them how would they pay for it. Anyway, I had in mind to upgrade to the new one because I had more wireless to use at home. But the product is good and love it.Read full review...
