This is a networking classic! Proven and stable technology, and plug and forget, as long as you are not planning to move to 802.11n (which most likely is not worthed for 99% of everyday users). Flash it with DD-WRT and you'll get yourself a wireless bridge/gaming adapter, repeater, etc. I have a couple of these (or WRT54Gv4 which is the same thing) running as the main router, wirelss bridges, and repeaters and have great wireless coverage throughout a 4000 sq.ft double-story building without need to drill or install a line. Thanks to these little devices, I have all my pc/laptops, satelite receivers, DVD-players, HDTVs, and basically anything with an ethernet port hooked up to the netweork.
This is an excellent product with the latest Linux firmware DD-WRT 2.4 firmware. This allows the router to be intelligent to it's surroundings and is able to pick the best unsecured WiFi network for internet browsing. One connection with access to many - Awesome!
This Router was totally simple to install and get working perfectly.
My old wireless router (Not a Linksys) gave me fits and refused to let me connect either my old or new laptop to the network.
The WRT54GL picks up a signal from rooms far away from it. It is one that has some firmware for it (not from the manufacturer) but I'm very happy with the way it works from out of the box.
I highly recommend it :)
The WRT54GL router is a solid workhorse. It has plenty of horsepower to deal with the fastest broadband connections (> 20Mbps). And, the best part is that you can install Linux-based DD-WRT firmware for more features and increased robustness.
THE ROUTER WORKS GREAT ONCE YOU ACTUALLY GET IT SETUP. THE SETUP WIZARD DOES NOT WORK FOR THIS ROUTER, AND YOU HAVE TO ACTUALLY HAVE A LITTLE KNOWLEDGE ABOUT HOW WIRELESS NETWORKING IN ORDER TO INSTALL IT. THIS IS NOT FOR SOMEONE WHO IS A BEGINNER. ONCE THE ROUTER WAS SETUP THOUGH THE RANGE IS GREAT. I CAN GO ALL THE WAY TO THE OTHER END OF THE HOUSE AND EVEN GO OUTSIDE WITH MY COMPUTER AND I STILL GET A SIGNAL. I WOULD RECOMMEND THIS, BUT ONLY TO THOSE WHO KNOW ABOUT HOW TO SETUP A WIRELESS NETWORK OR IF YOU KNOW SOMEONE WHO DOES THAT CAN INSTALL IT FOR YOU.
After much research on wireless routers, I decided to buy the WRT54GL from Linksys. It was simple to set up and works flawlessly anywhere in the house, and out on the front & back porch. Haven't ventured much further, but it suits my needs perfectly for the coverage I have. So my review reflects all the other reviews I read before I purchased, this is a good buy and a good router.
i find the linksys wireless router with a dd-wrt firmware is a perfect combination.
dual antennas increase the range of wifi connection. the yagi external antenna works well with the installed firmware and increases the range even further.
a product worth buying.
Easy to connect. Worked great right out of the box. I work from home one day a week and now I can work outside when it's nice out! My folks live in the house next door to me and my mom can get DSL from my computer now rather than use her Dial-up! So, distance is not a problem with this router!
i'm very happy with this router. i used it to hook up two computers with cat 5. the original computer was not slowed down one bit after hooking up the second. buy this router.
the linksys wrt54gl router is one of the best routers due to the fact that it is *really* compatible with open firmwares such as openwrt and dd-wrt that add features to your router and also allow you to use it as a http, ftp, irc or more.
