In the Good Old Summertime (1949) stars Judy Garland and Van Johnson as workplace antagonists in a Chicago music store who don't realize they're also secret, romantic pen pals. The story (and a substantial portion of the dialogue) is borrowed from the James Stewart-Margaret Sullavan film The Shop Around the Corner. Both the original movie and this musical remake are charming and enjoyable.
The entire cast is very good. "Cuddles" Sakall plays the boss, and the other store employees are played by Buster Keaton, Clinton Sundberg, and Spring Byington. Keaton has a particularly funny scene involving tripping on stairs and falling backwards. It's a "pure Keaton" moment. Violinist Marcia Van Dyke is pleasing as Johnson's friend and neighbor. Also, watch for Liza Minnelli in her screen debut at age two and a half. She's the girl held by Van and real-life mother Judy in the last scene of the movie.
There are a few good songs but not as many as one would expect in a Judy Garland musical. This is because the part and the film were not intended for Garland. Judy was called in later to replace another actress. She is nevertheless lovely and sings beautifully, as always. Van Johnson makes a good foil for her.
I highly recommend In the Good Old Summertime to fans of movie musicals.
'In The Good Old Summertime' is a beautiful, fun, exciting, hilarious & charming movie. The chemistry between Judy & Van Halen is believeable and sweet. All of the actors are great. S.Z Sakall is a little hard to understand sometimes with his thick European accent but otherwise he's good. Buster Keaton is a funny side character. I love this movie. I give it 10/10. See this for all the things I mentioned and also Judy singing. Every song she sings is fabulous but my absolute favourite is when she sings 'I Don't Care'. She does it with such energy, power and humour it's infinitely rewatchable.
The special features on the DVD are good. You get 3 trailers (a trailer for 'The Shop Around The Corner', a trailer for this movie, and one for 'You've Got Mail), 2 Vitaphone travel shorts about Chicago in 1948 that are alright but relatively boring and an excellent introduction by esteemed Judy Garland biographer John Fricke.
Great price, great movie, great DVD.
Buy it now! :D
JUDY GARLAND AT HER BEST! YOU'LL LOVE THE 1890'S COSTUMES AND THE SONGS AND DANCES ARE FABULOUS. HER'ES AN OLD FASHIONED LOVE STORY WITH A TWIST. SECRET PENPALS ARE TWO CO-WORKERS WHO CAN'T STAND EACH OTHER. IN THE END, LOVE WINS OUT WITH A BEAUTIFUL HAPPY ENDING. POP SOME POPCORN AND ENJOY. THIS MOVIE IS SO GOOD I WILL PROBABLY WEAR OUT THIS DVD.
It was a very good movie. I didnt realize until half way into it that the movie You've Got Mail was evidently based on this movie. You've Got Mail is one of my favorites. I really enjoyed this movie and would recommend you see it. I bought it in the first place because Judy Garland was in it and I really like her but have never seen any of her movies. And lastly, Liza is absolutely adorable at the end. A+++++
Excellent original version of You've Got Mail theme. Very charming. Entertaining chemistry between Judy Garland and Van Johnson and debut or baby Liza Minelli. The movie is set predominantly in a charming music store in Chicago, Illinois.
I've loved this movie ever since I first saw it. So glad I found it here at an awesome price. Judy Garland is one of my favorite actresses and she is great in this movie. Love the singing, the songs, and the story line.
I like this product because I love comedy and musicals.
I like this due to having a wonderful comedian of all-time, Buster Keaton where he put in some of his gags and a very good pratfall for one part of the film which was written in the script. I have no dislikes at all.
I have enjoyed seeing the others with the same subject like Shop Around the Corner and You Got Mail which inspired this film.
I saw this movie when I was younger with my mom and I love it. It's the based off of The Little Shop Around the Corner and the movie You've Got Mail is also similar to this movie. This is my favorite though because I love Judy Garland.
I purchased "In the Good Old Summertime" to replace my lost copy. It's one of my favourite movies especially around Christmas time. Plus, you have to love Judy Garland paired with Van Johnson. As "Pygmalion" is to "My Fair Lady", this movie is the basis for "You've Got Mail".
I LOVE this movie! This is an outstanding movie that is one of my all-time favorites!Whenever friends come over this is the movie of choice. The first time I saw it I watched it 3 times in a row, and I have watched it many times since. It never loses its charm!I practically have the whole movie memorized. It's wholesomely romantic and heartwarming!
