While this is an older Canon "Prosumer" body, it's actually stronger in image quality than the 50D and a more robust professional body than the 60D. The image quality and low light performance of this camera is great.
I would recommend this body to anyone who's advanced past the Rebel line of beginner cameras, but doesn't have the cash to afford a 7D or 5D.
The only drawback for this camera vs. the 50D is the lower resolution LCD, but that doesn't effect picture quality.
This camera is very good if you are a beginner. I wouldnt say that this camera is for the amateur but someone with little to no experience in photography. It has many functions to play around with which are very basic.
The image quality is very good, however this camera is now dated and does not have a video functionality.
Battery life is very good. I take about 40 pictures daily and don't need to recharge for about 2 weeks.
This is a very durable camera. It shoots when told to and never fails.
It has manual and automatic focus settings.
Despite it's age, the Canon 40D is still a nice camera for general photography, particularly sports photography because of its high FPS. Today (9/12) you can pick one up for under $350 off eBay. Its a very rugged camera and has a long shutter life (100,000). Replacement of shutter is affordable (about $200-250 seems about average) thus extending the life of the camera for several more years.
Wanted to upgrade from my canon 20D and when I saw the price along with the 28-135mm IS lens had to scoop it up! Nice upgrade from the 20D I have. Higher burst capabilities and custom functions make this a nice semi-professional camera, along with the 3 inch view screen. 10 MP is more then enough for my needs and the wide choice of both EF-S and EF lens by Canon and third party providers makes any Canon camera a great choice!
Canon EOS 40D is a camera which gives you perfect quality of image from one side and ensures you an easy work from another one. It has a magnificent design, its body is very ergonomic and lets change the settings quickly in quickly varying conditions of photography. For me it's an almost ideal camera which has only one "shortcoming"... it isn't a full frame camera))) But, it has many functions and it has the design of its "elder brother" Canon EOS 5D, which is recommended as the next grade for a Canon's admirer.
I am pleased with this camera very much and I recommend it.

This is one of Canon's best digital cameras overall - price, features, and service longevity - for advanced amateur photographers.
This is a great semi-Professional camera. I am a Professional Photographer and I use this camera as a back up and it does the job. It was the first camera I bought and works great for sports, weddings, portraits, and even for personal use. I find the new set-up of controls really simple to use on this camera especially on the fly.
Love this camera. Everything. Especially the live-view. Sadly, my hands are too small to deal with it :(
Great unit, but more difficult to use than any camera previously owned. Once I have all aspects somewhat mastered, I feel it will be more than adequate. The lens is wonderful.
