Malcolm McDowell's Caligula is an extremely graphic version of the short-lived and cruel reign of, Roman Emperor, Gaius "Caligula." It begins by establishing Caligula's disturbing relationship with his sister (Julia) Drusilla. From his succession as Emperor (following the untimely death of his 77 year-old uncle, Tiberious) to his eventual and anticipated death, the majority of the film focused on Caligula's latter and notoriously-decadent, cruel, and bizarre behavior. Though the 156-minute feature is disturbingly-accurate, much of the film is pornography. Caligula is very well-made with realistic and elaborate scenery to mirror any modern major motion picture that, with hard-core sex and, often-times, unnecessarily-gratuitous and deviant behavior, will show some of the most violent, sexual, and diturbing acts in cinema history. Though it accurately displays Gaius' succession, late-tenure as Emperor, flu and death of his sister, Drusilla, and (brief) preceding by (Uncle) Claudius, much of the details were modified for entertainment-value and would be difficult to see exclusively for its historic appeal. Reluctantly, it has entertainment-value as one of the most memorable and violent films ever made.
I haven't seen this in 25 years and wanted to see it now that I've done research on the real Caligula. This is an X rated film and I usually don't watch them but in this case I'll see it 1 more time.
I thought the movie was good. Informative and entertaining. Caligula was clearly of his rocker. There was a few scenes of hardcore sex but thats how it was in that time. Do not know what all the fuss was about. If you do not want to see those scenes, then do not watch the uncensored version.
While somewhat distorted in certain aspects of Ancient Roman life, Caligula does showcase generally what life would be like for an Ancient Roman Caesar.
Very sexually graffic. At times a little hard to follow but overall enjoyable as the subject matter did a good job of quite a few historical events that took place during the reign of Coligula.
THe 156 minute version is the only way to go. Still alot of the shots in the film are hazy but I believe that is the way it was filmed. Very graphic film in the sexual and violence aspects. Not for anyone who doesn't understand what the real Rome was like when it was crumbling.
GREAT ACTORS.......TOO MUCH SEX...YEA RIGHT......BOUGHT IT FOR HISTORICAL VALUE
I WAS TOO LAZY TO SEE IT WHEN IT WAS IT WAS IN THE MOVIES..NOW I CAN VIEW IT WHENEVER I NEED A LAUGH
I don't know why this film got such a bad rap. It's a film of decadence and debauchery, but anyone purchasing this film, already expected that right?
Great movie that hits on the real substance of ancient Rome and the outlandish behavior of the time by the elite.
I watched this movie when I was in the army and loved it so I just had to buy it and only found it on e-bay. You can get the R rated version anywhere But this is the one to have.
