First I bought this camcorder for paranormal investigating which I would NOT recommend it!!!
The good thing about this camcorder is that its easy to use and the functions are "kid-friendly", so anyone can pretty much figure them out with out the manual. It has a Li Ion battery and option for alternare AA batiereis which is nice for emergency back up. Has HDMI, AV and USB cables so lots of options for downloading and viewing your videos. Two SD spots was a great idea because it dramatically increases your recording time. Has easy touch screen functions if you dont want to surf for buttons but I have to say the LCD flip out screen feels very flimsy so I'd rather use the buttons.
12 MP resolution gives decent images. The picture quality is average so it gets by for regular video shooting. Macro mode is good for upclose video and photo shooting of smaller objects. Picture mode is decent but was not impressed with the flash which made the photos way too bright in a dim lighted room! I would have rated this camcorder 3 stars for picture and sound quality if it wasen't for the sound. Really the speaker is too small and it lacks tunning, the mic also too small and won't capture sound beyond a limited range. They should have included an external MIC jack with this camcorder which it does not have. Makes it difficult to capture sounds in paranormal investigation.
The IR night mode option was also a dissapointment having used the Sony NightShot before this camcorder fell short! The range is only about 5-6 feet so if you plan to use this for night recording you WILL need to buy an additional IR lighting system to extend the range of vision in the dark....a decent one on eBay will go for about 45-50$.
The camcorder is light and compact but also feels fragile and flimsy, I would not let my 6 yr old handle it for fear of easy breakage! Buttons and such just don't feel well made, the squiggle and giggle.
The zoom is digital and only 4x's so again just like the mic,IR light and speaker, the feature is there but the range is very limited.
Digital recording means versatility in reviewing and editing your images so that is a plus.
Over all for my personal purpose which was paranormal invetigation this camcorder just did not fit the bill so I ended up returning it. Aside from the fact that it arrive damaged with mal functions since it was refurbished.
My recommendations is if you are buying to have a decent inexpensive camcorder for family video documenting and special occasions than you get what you pay for, a decent-average inexpensive and disposable camcorder in 3 years time. That will do what it's ment to do which is capture your personal moments.......
If you are looking for something a bit more substancial and long lasting with night vision I recommend the Sony NightShot models..... they have different options on recording media to fit everyones bill and needs with a bit more durability.
The DNV900HD is, for the most part, a disappointment. The video quality, even in HD, is poor in that it emphasizes some colors over others to make a strange kind of blurb of colors (not good at all compared to its competitors). It also seems to shoot video at a very low frame rate, as the video comes out kind of choppy. Audio is okay, but not great. The zoom is certainly below average for a camcorder, being that it has no optical, and only 4x digital zoom. The infrared function is very, very bad. The infrared light on the camcorder only reaches about 3-5 feet in front, and it is not really compatible with any other infrared light source. I've tried game camera LEDS, spotlights with filters, the Sima SL-100IR, and none of them work very well at all with this camcorder. If you want a good infrared camcorder, go with something like the Sony HDR-CX7. This camcorder is, however, small and easy to carry. And if you don't care about video quality or advanced features, its average for the price. But don't expect superb video. And just a note: it seemed a bit flimsy.
my thoughts about the Bell And Howell DNV900HD camcorder...
over all its a great camera, it does have a fairly nice night vision, but it is limited to about 5 - 10 feet viewing. thats not really bad. it does have Hi-Def recording, day time use is great, nice picture, easy to use buttons, and are at your thumb`s level of use. the mic is not to bad, although could use some better placement, its on top of the camera. or could have a external mic jack, for use of add on mics. over all, it is a great camcorder for the price. light weight, nice 3"LCD, touch controll`s. for easy use, and less fumbling around trying to get the right settings. just touch and go ..
I use this for Paranormal investigations, at night. adding a IR Illumination to this camera and your talking a great camera, wish they could have done better on the IR light side of it, by using a real IR light, instead of something that looks like a electronic light. the battery level is not that great, life span of battery when using the IR setting is about 1:30 minutes of full IR use. for daytime, use, with good light from out side, or around the home, batter is longer, about 2 - 3 hours depending on time of use. the battery that comes with the unit, is a 1200mAh Cnp-40 Lithium ion battery or a Casio EX cnp-40, battery will work. i think they should of used a 1600mAh battery instead, for more power and longer use. or used a another style of battery that will give the use more life time on the charge. i gave a 4 star due the battery and the sound, they could have include a out out jack for head phones, if they wanted you to hear nicely from the camera its self, or could have done a better speaker in it, and placement of the speaker. .. the rest of the camera is a 5 star
I COULD NOT LOVE MY ITEM ANY MORE THE PEOPLE I DELT WITH ARE GREAT AND FAST SERVICE THE COMUNICATION WAS EXCELLENT ALSO MY CAMERA TAKES PICTURES THAT ARE CLEAR ITS HARD TO GET USE TO DOWNSIZEING IM USE TO LARGER CAMERA'S BUT ONCE YOU ARE USE TO THAT ITS GREAT
Downloaded the manual for it and to find out how to zoom in and out. Got some great video's of our pets playing and us just clowning around more or less to get familiar with the camcorder. All in all, it seems to work just lovely.
I was a little concerned when I read the other reviews on here. But all and all its not a bad little camera. No its not a Sony but it is also not being sold at a Sony price either. The IR emitter is rather weak in total darkness so you will need to make yourself an IR flashlight which if you do a google search that can be done for cheap or you can go the more expensive route and buy one. In low light though it works great and I don't know why people where saying they got weird colors in normal light mine was fine. The plastic the camera was made from could be a couple of millimeters thicker would be about my only real negative.
I was dissapointed with this camera since day 1 too.
