I haven't seen this film in years. It was even better this time. Ms. Tyson's performance is spectacular. As I recall, this film was one of, if not THE, pioneer of realistic aging makeup/prosthetics techniques. And for a film produced in the 70's, the makeup has stood the test of time. I found the aging process done on Ms. Tyson's character equal too or better than that of the last scene of K19, in which the former submarine crew members meet many years later for a memorial service.
That aside, the film is obviously an important historical piece, tracing her life from the oppression of slavery through the freedoms and rights African/American citizens fought for through the years.
I highly recommend this film to anyone interested in the civil rights movement or in theater craft - actually, it's a good reminder to anyone, of any race, sex, religion or political belief that we, as human beings, SHOULD be treated as equals.
Although this is a fictional film,it gives an accurate and overlooked account of the struggles of a woman who had endured numerous hardships which spanned from the late 17th century up until the civil rights era. Some would like to forget that slavery existed in this country, but this film gives viewers an accurate account of the physical and psychological ramifications caused by slavery, and yet again during the Jim Crow Era. Miss Pittman suffered from personal loss time and time again which built her strong character. The most poignant part of the film is when Miss Pittman has found out that her surrogate son has been killed by the racist police department in Mississippi, and in an act of civil disobedience, she takes a drink from the whites only water fountain as everyone from the police department and her entourage quietly observe. I'm a grown man, but no matter how many times I watch that scene, it always brings me to tears. They should make this film mandatory for courses of study in schools around the country.
History at its best. Cicely Tyson is wonderful as Miss Jane Pittman. This movie keeps you riveted to your seat. A must see and a must have in your movie library.
I love this movie. This our history this is what our kids today are lacking .Buy it for your family. No matter what nationality your home is this will help you understand the struggle african americans have been threw.
This is truly one of the best made for tv movies of all time & one of the best black history films. Second only to "Roots"
I am a white middle aged man and I work with a older black lady.I think by watching this movie I might understand why she act's like she is racist. I have told her that she is profileing me, she laughed at that.
i have seen this movie when i was in school, it has put an impressive emotion in myself. Iwould recommend for this movie to be televised for everyone to see.If it did that to me back in school it should still be in school, it teaches you a lesson.it did me. was very excited to see that i have it in my hands for now i can let grandkids see it too. i would give this movie a 10 rated for sure.
