iPad 2 is still the best tablet

Let me begin by saying that I think that the iPad is a fantastic device. I am an early adopter that has Windows, Apple, and Android products and enjoys them individually for what they are. This review is comparing the new iPad 2 to the original iPad release to help you decide if you should upgrade or try to find one of the older units on the “cheap”.

The iPad 2 comes in the same memory options as the original – 16 GB, 32 GB and 64 GB and no external slot is available for memory cards. With all these memory options you can install tons of apps. With the dual-core in effect, you will notice a faster loading of apps, web-pages, and web based apps compared to the original. The original was not “slower”, but in comparison, you can notice a definite speed increase. I believe that web pages and web-based apps are loading faster do to increased wifi capabilities, but I am unable to test this theory.

Like the original, iPad 2 is a slick device, meaning both beautiful and slippery. Looking much like the original, except now it's 10% lighter and 33% thinner. What does this mean? This unit actually becomes even more slippery when moving it around in hand. The original's had some weight behind it, good and bad (though only by a few ounces), was enough to keep it in your hands. iPad 2 is like a is beginning for a warranty for the unit because when hands become sweaty playing games or in heat, this thing could go flying out.

However, the Smart Cover, is an awesome option to combat this, albeit a minimum $40 option, it is NICE! Using magnets embedded in the iPad 2, the Smart Cover clicks into place to protect the iPad screen, adds hardly any weight or bulk, and turns off the unit very “sexily”. When the Smart Cover is closed, the iPad goes to sleep automatically, and then awakens when the cover is opened. The Smart Cover can also be folded to act as a stand for typing or movie watching.

The display is the same, and this is why I feel this isn’t the leap we were expecting. This does not have the Retina Display, and still boast the same specs as the original. I’m not saying that the screen is awful at all, the iPad 2's screen is still as good as the original.
The iPad 2's speaker has been moved from the side to the rear. In my opinion, this may be the only negative thing that has changed with the new release. The cameras on this device actually don’t have iPhone 4's 5 MP HDR camera, iPad 2 has a .69 MP (960 x 720) rear-facing camera and a.33 MP (640 x 480) camera in front. Unfortunately, the pictures are not the best, but in defense of the device, you are probably not taking stills with this thing. The pics tend to be grainy lack pizzazz. The cameras are really for are the ability to video chat using either Apple's FaceTime or Skype.

But if those upgrades aren't important to you, the original iPad at it's newly reduced price is makes for an excellent choice as well.

The iPad 2 includes three major upgrades over the original iPad 1:

•iPad 2 is a third thinner and a few ounces lighter than the original. It also has a slightly smaller surface area – the screen is the same 9.7 inches, but the bezel is smaller which makes it nice when you do hold this.
•There is now front and back cameras, so you can use Apple's FaceTime video chatting.
•Dual core processors (actually two 1 GHz processors on a chip).
Other than that, the new iPad is just a slightly smaller, thinner, faster upgrade to the iPad Original. You could call this an iPad 1.4 per say.

iPad 2 - true desktop, laptop, gaming, DVD replacement

The 1st iPad was as close to a laptop replacement as one could get, finally bringing the web, photo editing, word processing, and gaming Mac-style not only affordably, but in an easy to use fashion.

As a daily user of my 1st generation iPad, I've found the The iPad 2 has several new features that make it even better than before. The only drawback is that many older cases and accessories will no longer work. Docks and Sync cables remain the same.

The new iPad is considerably thinner, more durable, and almost a 1/3 lighter in weight.

The iPad 2 also features a new docking accessory, sold separately that allows video mirroring for your computer or video out to your TV via HDMI and audio out.

This allows you to watch downloaded movies, view facebook and twitter, play games, and see your iPad directly on a big screen!

    - A much faster processor and more RAM. This allows better app multitasking and allows the iPad 2 to have three new features that the 1st generation iPad wasn't capable of ...

    1) Facetime video using the two built in cameras. One on the rear of the new iPad, one on the face. This will allow true video conferencing over wifi and 3G.

    2) The faster processor has also allowed Apple to release a version of iMovie for the iPad. iMovie for the iPad allows editing of videos right on the iPad. (iMovie is an additional $4.99 from the Apple App Store and does not ship with the iPad 2.)

    3) The addition of a Garageband audio creation and editing application. Almost identical to the Mac desktop version but now with touch controls. (Garageband is an additional $4.99 from the Apple App Store and does not ship with the iPad 2.)

    - The addition of cameras has also allowed Apple to release Photobooth for the iPad. Photobooth is Apple's real time Photo/Video effects enhancing application. Example: One part of the application allows you to look like you are in funhouse mirrors - stretching your face in various funny ways. Another effect allows you to look like you are in a heat scan and another an x-ray view.

The iPad 2 is also now available on both Verizon CDMA and GSM networks. The GSM version is sold by various retailers in the United States but does not come carrier locked - but AT&T does have specific data plans for the iPad.

If you happen to have the iPad unlimited plan in the United States with AT&T - AT&T said that you are grandfathered in and can continue to use your unlimited plan with your new iPad 2.

The iPad 2 will also come in black and white in sizes of 16 gigabytes (GB) 32 GB 64 GB and in wifi & wifi + 3G versions.

My personal recommendation for the iPad is to save a little money and get just the wifi version and then use other options to connect to the internet if you are near a wifi hotspot - options like jailbreaking your iPhone for a wifi hotspot or paying to wirelessly tether your phone.

Please let me know if there's anything else you would like to know ...

32GB Wifi iPad 2 / The Sweet spot for iPad / Perfect!

To me, the 32GB wifi version is the sweet spot for the iPad 2 ... read on to see why.

iPad 2= BEST tablet on the market, hands down!

The iPad 2 is so amazing when it comes to it's user experience, features, price, build quality and so much more. The highlights of iPad 2, in my opinion, are:

*New Black or White color option
    *Much thinner & lighter
*Two cameras for FaceTime & recording 720P HD video.
    *New Smart Covers
    *Still amazing battery life
*A5 Processor DUAL-CORE, blazing fast on iPad 2

These are just a handful of iPad 2's highlights. I highly recommend iPad 2 to everyone & anyone looking for an awesome tablet!

Awesome product! Great value for the money!

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

For anyone out there who is considering whether or not to make the leap and purchase the iPad 2, this review is for you. If you're still debating between the iPad 1 and the iPad 2 check out my review of the first generation iPad right here on Amazon to see a discussion of its strengths and weaknesses with a number of people commenting (both positively and negatively) over the past 11 months.

Let me begin by saying this upfront, I don't work for Apple, I don't own Apple Stock, and whether you buy an iPad, Xoom, a laptop or a pad of paper and pencil I don't get anything for writing this. I'm not an Apple "fanboy" although I can give credit where credit is due and lately Apple has deserved a lot of credit for some of their products.

    Physical Characteristics
The iPad 2 is absurdly thin. More importantly than it's thinness is its tapered edge which feels more natural in your hand. One of the biggest complaints about the original iPad was it really wasn't tremendously comfortable to hold for long periods at a time. For a tablet device designed to be held, that's a pretty big deal. Apple really has done an amazing job of cramming everything into an even smaller space than before and the difference is really noticeable when you're holding the device. In addition to the tapered edge, Apple managed to reduce the overall weight of the iPad 2. That might not seem like a huge deal to most, especially when you consider the weight difference isn't tremendous when you're already under 2 pounds, but I spend a good part of my day holding the iPad in my hands and the weight difference is surprising by the end of the day. The first generation isn't heavy by any means, but the iPad 2 outshines it.

    New and "Improved"
Apple doubled the RAM in the iPad 2 from 256MB to 512MB. What does that mean? For most casual users, probably not a whole lot. There is a performance bump that everyone will see the effects of in things like loading times for webpages that are open in the background, but 256MB was sufficient for most daily use and games. If you're planning to use your device for some of the more graphically intense games the iPad 2 does offer a better method of graphics processing that'll help deliver faster images with fewer jerky movements. If you're just playing Angry birds and reading e-mail you're not going to know the difference.

The screen is the same for all real purposes. It is technically a "new" part in that it isn't identical to the old, it's a bit thinner and more efficient, but it's the same resolution. The Glass is thinner though, and this amounts to a fair bit of the weight loss from one generation to the next. In playing with the device it seems surprising but despite feeling lighter it actually feels more sturdy in your hands. I still wouldn't suggest dropping it, but if it were to fall the iPad 2 certainly feels like it might stand a better chance to survive. Try not to drop it though.

The addition of 2 cameras was expected. Some were a bit surprised to see the first generation released without the cameras. Whether it was for a price point consideration, or a means to get people to upgrade, Apple held off until iPad 2. The cameras do a reasonable job, but they're not going to replace a dedicated digital camera, or really even the camera on your phone for most still images. The cameras do a substantially better job with video, and FaceTime is probably one of the best reasons to get the iPad 2 over the original iPad. For those who might not

Buy it, find an AT&T Genius Bar and start the fun!

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

Love it! Bought it for work, needing an easier way to access/display photos. It's perfect! The screen is crystal clear. Navigation thru the photos is so fast and I can email the photos to my clients from the viewing screen! Saves me a ton of time. I also needed a smaller, lightweight computer for on the go. My laptop was too heavy/bulky on vacation when traveling with the kids. When I buy computers, I always buy the one with all the features. Didn't figure I would need the 3G, but with AT&T service @ $25/mo (which I didn't have to activate right away) I made sure to have the option. Buying on eBay is awesome!

Have to say it- I HATE ITunes. It is a pain. Couldn't get my photos on the IPAD so I went to BEST BUY. Their "pro" tried to sell me the camera adapter. The IPAD comes with a USB cord. I asked the pro how to transfer photos using it - couldnt tell me! As a new IPAD user, there should be an instruction manual ON THE IPAD!! Forums and the tips apps are great, but when you are out of wifi range and dont have 3G active, they do you no good!

Printer apps are a pain. I have a wifi printer at work and home. Still can't seem to navigate the printers thru all the apps to print. Why load apps on the home page with no printer app? Most printer apps have the preloaded apps in them and won't print from the home screen apps- at least I can't seem to.

I'm a Microsoft office user. Still trying to get the office app working. The switch from what you know to this has had its ups (speed)and downs (apps &Itunes). Wish there was a delete button on the internal keyboard! Moving the cursor around to backspace is a pain.

I've been told to hit the genius bar at the local AT&T store for help. Havent had time, but I did call the AT&T store to ask my photo upload question. I called 2 stores, the first store didn't have anyone who had an IPAD or who could answer ??s. The second store only had one person who could answer ???s and they took 4 hours to call me back! I ended up on Facebook and got more help from there than I did anywhere else.

I still highly recommend this product. I hardly use my laptop anymore! I bought a wireless (rechargeable) Adesso keyboard case for the IPAD and love it! I know it's just a matter of time before I have this mastered, but in the meantime, slightly frustrated! If you download an app, you should be able to use it whether you are in a wifi spot or not, especially if you paid for it. You should not have to be "connected" to use your apps. If you buy an IPad, make sure you purchase the "top 100tips for IPad" app. It's $0.99 and well worth it.

I have an Android phone. While I like the ease of its first time user friendliness, the IPAD ROCKS!!

    Fantastic Product!

18 months ago I was not at all an apple person. I didn't even own an ipod. Then my wife and I got iPhones and that changed. The apple products just simply work. Not sure if it is because apple makes both the hardware and software, or they are just that much better, but they just seem to work better than comparable devices.

We just brought home the iPad 2 and it is no exception. It works flawlessly, and all our iPhone apps are right there for us to use. So far we have to take turns with the kids to use it. It has actually turned out to be a great disciplinary tool because we can threaten to take it away, and they immediately behave! My kids love making video calls to their cousins via facetime (cousins have ipod touches), as well as their grandparents that facetime via their mac. Garageband and iMovie are amazing. And where can you buy great software like that for under $5? My kids love the games too. And most are free or .99 or 1.99. I remember spending $20-$30 per game for DS, gameboy, etc. Now the games they buy can be played on our mac, iPod touch, ipad, iPhone, etc. I can't tell you how many game cartridges are sitting unused because they got a new game system. No more. The pics are decent and and the HD movies are great.

People say "well it's just a big iPod Touch". And I say "exactly!" It's all the great features of the iPod Touch in a great big screen size. It is amazing how much of a difference it makes. Games, maps, email, web surfing, movies, etc. It all is so much better at the larger size. The 16gb is only a little more than double the iPod Touch, and for me it's a no-brainer. Get it. You will not regret it!

Useful, reliable, long battery life and very convinient.

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

If you are looking for great, fast, reliable and long battery life tablet then choose iPad 2. Great availability of Apps, content, accessories - this is only the first part of great experience. Sorry to say for competitors, but they are still not in this league.
Real minuses of the product only visible in certain usages:
    1) its not a computer, but an entertainment and content consumption device
    2) no support for external flash cards (even with external card reader you'll not have expected experience);
    3) low quality of both cameras (please notice that for videochats with Skype and Facetime its more then enough)
    4) No Flash support that only visible at some sites;
    5) you have to buy a case, if you'd like to save great cosmetic shape.

Bottom line - great product and good tool for browsing web, reading boks, casual games and etc. Greatly recomended as it worth every cent.

iPad 2 versus Android tablets and my eBay experience!

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

I realized with the original release of the iPad (2010) that such a device would radically change how I (and others) interacted with the World Wide Web (WWW). As a sales and marketing professional, I spend a fair amount of time traveling and connecting with the WWW is oftentimes problematic. However, the iPad with WiFi & 3G connectivity was an answer to my prayers. Doing useful work such as word docs, spreadsheets and powerpoint presentations requires a desktop, laptop or netbook. Trying to accomplish these activities on an iPad or any other tablet is an exercise in futility and loaded with user frustrations.

While the iPad was the clear front runner, pricing was somewhat prohibitive. So I ventured into the Android tablets with the purchase of two (2) 7.0" tablets. While these devices satisfied my basic needs, they were far removed from the iPad. Accessing Maps, email, websites and other content was a cinch. But the smaller screen size left a great deal to be desired.

After monitoring iPads for sale on eBay for over six (6) months, I was finally able to identify the top of the line (64 GB, WiFi + 3G) iPad 2 from a local seller. I submitted my best offer and it was accepted. This particular user had only purchased the device in the prior two (2) weeks and decided to sell. She was very responsive and I received the device on the very next day (That was shocking in and of itself). I have never encountered a more responsive seller on eBay.

I contacted Apple after receiving the device and the remaining 11 1/2 month warranty was transferred quick and easily to my name. I even was given ninety (90) days to determine if I wanted to sign up for Apple Care that provides additional warranty and repair options.

My experience with this device has been extraordinary, even though it does not support Adobe Flash. The size, weight and screen size make the iPad 2 the ideal tablet IMHO. I also purchased a Smart Cover from an eBay reseller and that was quite a deal as well. It was priced at 40% of the comparable Apple cover. Stylish in its design, this Red/Black cover is highly recommended to take advantage of the iPad 2 "instant start" option as well as being an effective way to protect your investment.

In retrospect, I wish I would have purchased the iPad originally to save the cost of the Android tablets. But then again I never would have acquired the experience of operating the two (2) different architectures (iPad vs. Android). The lesson was invaluable as far as I am concerned.

Some may be very critical of Apple! But when it comes to design, functionality, user experience and value, they simply cannot be beat! The same can be said for eBay as well. If you are considering the purchase of an iPad 2, eBay is a solid choice! You just have to be patient and make your selection based upon what you are willing to pay. For me I invested over six (6) months looking for the right deal and I am very pleased with the results.
