A vividly rendered dramatization of Apollo 13's true-life brush with disaster on the way to the Moon in 1971. This mesmerizing film combines computer graphics, archive footage and seamless special effects to recreate the adrenalized odyssey of Astronauts Jim Lovell, Fred Haise and Jack Swigert who battled astronomical odds to make it back to Earth. I bought this dvd because my son is a space nut and this is his favorite movie. This two disc dvd set is amazing. Not only does it provide the original movie, but it also provides the Imax version and bonus materials. There are several interviews with the actual people involved in the Apollo 13 mission including Jim Lovell, Fred Haise, and Gene Kranz. You can actually watch the film with Jim and Marilyn Lovell commentating. There is also a special feature that shows the making of the movie and how they created the realistic looking shots that make it so amazing to watch. It has given me a whole new appreciation for space flight and what the crew of Apollo 13 went through. I would definitely encourage anyone remotely interested in space flight to purchase this dvd set.
Based on the true story of the Apollo 13 mission, this is one of the truly best movies that I have ever seen. It was nominated for nine Academy Awards and Director Ron Howard showed another true knock out film. Actors Tom Hanks and Gary Sinise are at their true best. They bring out all of the emotions that I am sure were felt by the Apollo crew, the fear, the hope, and the devotion to each other. When things go wrong with the Apollo 13 moon landing, it goes from that to one of true survival. The crew in the ship and the crew on the ground trying desperately to get them home safely. Of course, historically we know how it turns out, but that doesn't take away from the emotion felt while watching this film. Truly one of the greatest!
This is a classic movie about a true story. Three men go to the moon but never get there. There is an accident that leaves them not able to make it to the moon or even back home to Earth. So NASA intelligence has to get them home fast because they are lacking the oxygen they need. Watch this movie for a great thrill, for what would you do if you were trapped in an object in space and no way to get back home?

What a superb film! A real life based drama...Ron Howard is just wonderful! The story is so compelling! His attention to detail in script and visual detail is outstanding!!!!

This Anniversary edition of the now-classic movie Apollo 13 is worth buying just for the extras. If you have ever wondered exactly how accurate (or not) certain scenes might be, then listen to the audio commentary by Jim and Marilyn Lovell. You might be surprised that things you thought hokey (such as the scene where Marilyn's wedding ring flies off and down the drain) really happened. And yes, there are a few areas of artistic license, but, as Lovell explains, sometimes that is necessary for the sake of time constraints and to make things clear to the audience. Ron howard's directing does a great job of making the technical stuff clear while, at the same time, keeping us on the edge of ur seats. There's also a great "making of" documentary that intersperses real NASA footage with the movie to see how very accurate the sets were -- so much so, that NASA consultants sometimes forgot they were on a movie set and not the real thing! And a second documentary, "Conquering Space," gives a nice overview of the space program. Then, of course, there's the movie itseld, which remains one of my all-time favorites. I'm old enough to remember the actual events, and this film brings it all back perfectly.
Anyone who loves outer space will very much love this movie. it takes you back to the true events of apollo 13 and tells the heroic tale of three astronauts who take a thrilling journey into outer space and find out there mission will be cut short. and will try to get back to earth in one piece.
I really liked all the actor's in this film, Loved the special effects and the way the movie kept me and my family on edge to see what happened next. I also enjoyed the movie for reason's of it being a clean and decent movie for my children to watch and those are far and few in between to find as any parent would tell you!! I bought the movie because we love Tom Hanks and the other actors in this film and its just an overall fantastic exciting movie! I would definitely recommend this movie for people of all ages but, if your looking for a movie for family night..this is one movie i wouldn't think twice about to pop into the DVD player!! Just my opinion of course but i truly believe once you view it, you'll want to see it again and again and take pleasure in knowing its clean for the kids and exciting for the adults as well!!
I also enjoyed this movie. Great story, and a true one. I had just turned 12 years old when it happened and remember it being in the news. My older brother said our father had even asked us to pray for the Astronauts, but I had forgotten that. I was too young to understand all the details of what went on, so decided to get this movie and it explains everything very well. I had no idea there were so many obstacles to over come. Movie had great acting, great story, and was exciting. Highly recommended. Russ
This is a great DVD set. It was filmed in IMAX format, and that seems to make it all the more excellent in presentation. The extras are fasinating and for anyone who loves this film they really explain and expand the scope of the film. Everything about this film is done on the highest artistic level, from the acting to the direction, filming. On top of everyting else, this movie is spell-binding no matter how many times you see it.
