2 Oscar Nominations for a Reason Top Gangster movie

This was a terrific story set in the late 60s and early 70s Harlem. We all like a good "gangster" flick and American Gangster did not disappoint. The writing was excellent and Oscar winners Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe were captivating.

Washington's character, Frank Lucas, is THE gangster of his time. He puts out a superior product at a discount because he cuts out the middle men; ironically, something his mentor complained about in the early moments of the movie. Despite Lucas' evil acts and violence, the viewer becomes somewhat sympathetic to his character by the end of the movie. This is not unlike how a viewer feels kinship with Michael Corleone in the Godfather series.

Frank Lucas ascends the ranks by outwitting and outclassing his competition. His competition includes all of organized crime.

Russell Crowe's character, Richie Roberts, is hell bent on doing the right thing at any given moment. Surrounded by corrupt police, Roberts bucks the trend with so much honesty that he alienates himself. His pursuit of justice also causes him ancillary family problems. Roberts, in the movie, is equally driven to catch the criminals as he is addicted. While his colleague is addicted to heroin, Roberts is addicted to sex. The veiwer watches as Roberts attempts to do what no one has ever done before, while simultaneously facing a hurricane of personal life.

Although the movie is lengthy (2 hrs 40 min for the theatric version), the story tells itself and moves along quite nicely.

This DVD features all the extra scenes that were cut from the original. The viewer is allowed to watch either the original version or the theatric version. Either way, you'll enjoy it!

American Gangster

The story of this real life American is told in such a way as to present what may have been the facts of his life, however morbid or tough they were. It did not attempt to idolize or ostrasize the man and his life, merely present the facts. The screenplay was well adapted. Actor Denzel once again, in the prime of his career, shows his versatility in all roles. A great back up cast, from other Hollywood greats such as Chiwetel Ejiofor, Ted Levine; Josh Brolin, and Ruby Dee. Denzel Washington nails it as the smart and elusive Frank Lucas, who avoids the corrupt law enforcement right down to the time they close in on him. Russell Crowe puts in a strong performance as the overly patient detective, Richie Roberts. Both actors relive the tension between the two characters and make it real as it was. Great directing. A bit long, but never boring, with a 40 minute finish laced with intense violence. Just what was needed to keep you interested in the whole story.

Instant Gangster Classic

I have always loved gangster movies. I love Goodfellas, The Godfather, The Departed, and so on. American Gangster now enters that mix, as one of the best gangster movies of all time. Denzel Washington plays the heroin dealer who travels to Vietnam to find the best heroin for the cheapest amount of money. By cutting out the middle man, he offers the best product for the least amount of money, thus eliminating his competition who can't compete with him. All the while, he is gathering enemies on both sides of the law. The only problem is that no one knows who he is, until he decides to show up at the Fight of the Century with the best seats in the house, sporting a mink jacket and hat, while talking to other gangsters. That gives law enforcement agents some insight into who The Kingpin is. Russell Crowe plays the agent who heads the team to try to take down Denzel.

I'm not one to give away too much, but it is definitely one of my favorite gangster movies (which means it is one of my favorite movies). Crowe and Washington give absolutely superb performances, and it's confusing why they were snubbed at the Oscars (as was director Ridley Scott). I definitely recommend this movie, especially if you like gangster movies. If you like any of the movies I referred to (Goodfellas, Departed, The Godfather), you'll love this one as well.

American Gangster - Ridley Scott has another hit

Although I don't beleive that gangsters should be seen as up standing citizens and don't really like movies and series about them {The Sopranos.} Ridley Scott put tougher a very believable interruption of a true story. Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe made thier characters come alive, as usual. Which we have come to expect. I can remember this time in american history and believe it is about as close to what I remember seeing and hearing as you can get in a movie. It doesn't pull any punches and shows all sides of the Heroin trade.

I watched the unrated version. Although it was to long to release as the Theatrical version it was very good and felt complete. I would rate this movie 9.5 out of 10 Stars. A must see at least and would be a great addition to any movie library.......

American Gangster - DVD (The American Dream)

One of the best Gangster movies that has ever been released into the cinema. This movie leaves nothing but critics with a possitive attitude towards the movie. This movie is directed by a genious Ridley Scott. The sotry is written by Steven Zaillian who knows how to catch a viewers and readers attention with actions and words. It's a fascinating, but disturbing view of the American dream of certain individuals. It shows competition between rival gangsters. Some ending with bloodshed, and others with nothing left to live for.

There are two sides of the American dream. (Tagline) The movie includes the all time best actor, Denzel Washington as "Frank Lucas". Russell Crowe, who is by far a fantastic actor also plays in this amazing movie as Detective Richie Roberts. In the 1970's in America, a detective works to bring down the drug empire of Frank Lucas, a heroin boss from Manhattan, who is smuggling the drugs in from the far East in a genius way.

American Gangster

A sprawling mob epic that clearly wants to be a Harlem Scarface, Ridley Scott's gangster flick aims high and mostly measures up. Ambitious, engaging and occasionally even gripping, it never adds much to the genre — but it knows how to stroke genre tropes till they tremble.

Denzel Washington is strong and reasonably persuasive as Frank Lucas, a '70s dope king who, if the movie's version of this torn-from-magazine-headlines tale is accurate, got the bright idea of bribing servicemen to fly thousands of pounds of heroin stateside from Vietnam during combat operations, as if the U.S. military was his own personal FedEx.

An initially outmatched narcotics agent (Russell Crowe) struggles to make minor inroads, which eventually lead to a surprisingly big payoff. Director Scott crosscuts between their stories, mining them for ironic parallels — the gangster's a family man, the cop's a deadbeat dad, both men are principled in their divergent ways — and if the result isn't an instant classic, it's never less than engrossing.

Great buy. Great Movie!

Great Movie! Loved how it was action packed + drama packed. If you have not seen this movie yet, you must see it. Denzel Washington is a great actor.
To sum it up I believe this is an excellent telling of a true crime story. It's intriguing, entertaining, and certainly serves as a cautionary reminder to remain vigilant in combating drugs.
The film leaves you wanting to know more about about happened to the lead characters. You care about them that much. Now *that's* film making.
The drama is less than expected but the movie is very well paced and it never gets boring even if it lasts more than two hours. Everything fits perfectly and there is an excellent antithetical presentation of the wealthy life of Frank Lucas opposite to the lives that he's drugs ruin every day, every hour, every minute...

American Gangster

An excellent example of 2 Oscar-winners flexing their muscles(literally and figuratively)in a pretty good production. Some gaffes are visible(cars from years before time period in movie, incorrect linguistics for time period), but overall movie is excellent. Some periods can drag, but that's expected in a 2-hour long movie. The kindness and sadistic personality of Lucas is evident through Denzel's performance, as well as Crowe's honest working/dishonest social-life-having officer, Richie Roberts. Interesting portrayals by Common, TI, and Joe Morton as well. All in all, a movie that I wish COULD have a sequel just to see Crowe and Washington reprise the roles again! Must-see!
