Fall 2005 Edition

Neo-preppy, Grandpa chic and Euro casual are all part of a fresh look in menswear. Fun, too, is taking ideas from any of the three and mixing them together. Just start with the blazer and work in a shirt –that would be pink or green for preppy, plaid for Grandpa and blue for Euro casual.

And what do gentlemen prefer?

Aaah… breathe a sigh of relief. The classic trench coat is back in style and the range of options is staggering. Choose a traditional belted version or one with unexpected flare like this caped crusader (pictured below) from Michael Kors. Trenchant observation: Khaki is popular, but navy, black and au courant shades like pea green are wildly fashionable.

Generally, the coat has not been this stylish since the era of Jacqueline Kennedy in the Sixties. No longer just a cover-up, it stands alone as a way to make a personal statement, and styles run the gamut from brass-buttoned military looks to fitted dress coats. Most noteworthy are looks by Miuccia Prada, Andrew Gn, Oscar de la Renta and Kors. And fur trim is everywhere with some of the best from J.Mendel, Adrienne Landau, Cynthia Steffe, Carolina Herrera and Marc Jacobs.

This abundance of coat styles mirrors the season’s wide range of fashion trends. It can be confusing though, so we’ve narrowed it down for you. Click ahead to find some of the best coats. Just below, we’ve identified some best-buy items for fall. With these choices, you won’t go wrong.

Here's what to include in your fall hit list:

A special coat - military, fur-trimmed or with surface interest like tapestry, print or appliqué

Something velvet – preferably a little jacket or top

A romantic blouse – think Victoriana --  lace, ruffles, velvet

A black suit – a menswear look or one of the new feminine skirt suits

Beading, ornamentation –on sweaters,  jackets, jeans, dresses, even shoes

Fur– a vest, a stole or as trim on a jacket or a sweater

KEEP AN EYE OUT NOW FOR LOOKS THAT WILL WORK IN YOUR WARDROBE LATER

If you’ve ever wished the fashion wheel would turn more slowly, spring’s crop of new clothes is certain to make you smile. Popular styles for fall will have kissing cousins for spring. While everything will, of course, not look exactly the same (fashion companies, after all, still want you to open that wallet and buy some new clothes), you’ll be able to mix and match pieces purchased now with looks you’ll pick up later. An air of lady-like Victoriana is one theme that promises to span the seasons. Black and white is another.

Here are some of the looks and interpretations that are sure bets for fall and spring:

White – in dresses and full skirts

Little jackets and vests

Floral-print dresses

Metallics (like this dress from Marc Jacobs)

Earth colors like blue, brown and green

Tailored shorts

Romantic or tailored blouses (here, in satin by Jacobs)

African motifs –prints and jewelry

Tommy Hilfiger has been accused of shamelessly copying Ralph Lauren. His company is in the midst of downsizing in the U.S. while expanding abroad.

There's even talk of selling out to Wal-Mart. Nonetheless, Tommy has prevailed and he's done so by designing clothes that span the street and the golf course.
