The Impossible, or, The Hatred of Poetry
The Impossible (formerly entitled T...he Hatred of Poetry) exhibits Bataille's thought in a manner that is not easily presented in his more theoretical works or fiction. Bataille's habit of writing texts that do not quite fit into one genre or another makes his work highly engrossing. The Impossible is 3 parts diary (written by Bataille through, supposedly, fictional characters) and 1 part poetry. This text is rather suffocating, exposing the reader to the feelings of torment often espoused by Bataille. I bought this text in order to supplement my reading in a graduate level course I am currently taking on Bataille. The Impossible is a good counterpoint to Bataille's other writings.
