This was not a book I would have selected on my own. My daughter was assigned to read it in school. That is why I purchased. Was outside of what I would have picked on my own thinking I would enjoy the read. Thanks to her class reading it my horizons were broadened even more. This was a very good book. I highly recommend it.

This is the first book in DuPrau's new series, and in it a boy and girl realize that they're living underground after an apocalyptic-type event. For many years, a group of people living in the City of Ember have survived on limited amounts of food and luxuries, and things like light and lightbulbs are starting to become scarce. Confused as to why the problem can't be remedied, the boy starts looking into the problem. After a few clues from the city's original founders are discovered, the boy and girl are lead to a river, and they soon float out of the ground and into the real world. I loved this book when I read it, and every sixth grader I've recommended it to has loved it as well. It's an idea so strange and different that one can't help but entertain the idea of a city underground. I also have friends who have read it aloud to their classes, and I've heard that it makes a great read-aloud. The second book in the series, The People of Sparks, is also available.Read full review
After having seen the movie with my children, I got this hardcover for my 9 yr. old daughter. Having enjoyed the film, she still found more than enough difference in the book to love it. She tore through the book and has begun the second in the series, "The People of Sparks". "City of Ember", the first in a four book series, is more in-depth, different and complete than the film. Reading the book is not duplicating the movie. The book stands as its own entity. The film did not, I believe, enjoy the success of Harry Potter or Percy Jackson, but is a wonderful series to have your young, eager reader tackle. The characters are three dimensional, the story, though fantastical, is born of a realistic/real-life scenario and while not "babied-down" reading for kids, it is accessible AND challenging. Oh yes, the story is also very rewarding.Read full review
