Not a thinking man's/woman's/trans-human's Star Trek. Lots of action, shoot'em-ups, martial arts, and a generous sprinkling of humor, however, no thought provoking sci-fi story here. No time travel paradoxes, no super duper gargantuan alien ships, no fantastically impossible planet killers and just one and only one astronomically impossible coincidence, which of course saves the day. We do have the mandatory female aliens in tight cat suits and a really cool moon size space station. Worth the price of admission, just bring lots of popcorn.

The first two new Star Trek movies were SO good. This one was a little disappointing. I'm not sure that I understood the plot - What was the bad guy's motivation? He just wasn't interesting to me - We had Kahn (played by Benedict Cumberbatch) and Nero (played by Eric Bana) in the other movies and they were so great. I wish the movie had featured Anton Yelchin's character "Chekov" more, but who would have known he would be killed after this movie. I still love the franchise - we just need to get better writers - the actors and the special effects are still great - they just need a better premise and script.

Good cast, great franchise and lots of action. Having said that, the film seemed rushed. For example, the ease and speed in which they resurrected the Franklin (a 100+ year old star ship) was a really tough premise to accept, and the script was a bit campy in a spots. It's way, way too heavy on special effects, and lacks the engaging level of dialogue and personal interactions of its predecessors. It did portray the crew the way you would think they would look like after the beating they went through, a level of realism I liked. It was worth the $5 I spent for it on eBay.

The new versions of the original cast perform well and the the new characters are engaging. Great villain premise, and Scott and McCoy are both strengths and weaknesses in this film, as too much of either can be a little irritating but both are strong versions of their characters.

This movie is more of a video game than a story with beginning, middle, and end. It's puzzling what the producers were aiming for. Why make a film with obvious origins in the 1960's TV show and gear it to today's youth? Yes, the movie had some amazing special effects, but the storyline was blurred and confused. Also there was very little humor or character development. I'll be surprised if there are any more Star Trek "prequels" to be done in the future.
