This preformance was pure magic. I saw it ...first on PBS in 1996. I had never seen Celtic dancing before and I was captivated. It was if I was transported to the coast of Ireland, and transported back in time. Michael Flatley is more than talented, he is gifted, and his performance came from deep within his soul. The whole company took on the same spirit that he gives to the audience. I have seen some of his later performances (2007-2008) after he left the original company and they are good, but they lack the purity of his orginal work which was what was done in Dublin, and brought to the United States. Now his performances have become more Americanized with the glitter and senuality that Americans expect. In Riverdance-The Show 1996 you could see the confidence and the assurance that radiated from his face, and the faces of the company. It wasn't an act of work, but pure love of the dance and what it stood for. As I watched later performances it was as if he was saying " See, I can be and do it the way you want! let me know that I'm getting it right for you"!! The music was watered down celtic, the dance had become a mixture of ballet, acrobatics, american tap, with a little blues sprinkled in. Personally, Michael Flatly's orginal work was the very best if you are looking for pure Celtic entertainment with the heart and magic of Ireland, and its beauty. I hope Michael will come to the knowledge this his gift does not have to be modified to be appreciated. Through his gift I have been greatly moved, enlightened, and inspired.Riverdance- The Show (VHS) 1996 is by far the best.
Riverdance is an incredible s...how, and this is the best recording, with the best stars (Flatley and Butler). However, it's only available in VHS, and the tape quality after so many years is very poor.

I first "discovered" Michael Flatley on... public television when they were showing Riverdance. While much of the show seemed amateurish, there was an outstanding dancer whose name I had to learn and remember. He shed the mullet and went on to be very successful with Lord of the Dance, Feet of Flame etc. This is a very hard vhs to find but great example of his dancing skill - the dance with Maria Pages is worth buying the tape for.
I LOVE this video!!!! It's so cool!!! I'm ...Irish (well, partly anyway) and I've always wanted to learn how to dance like that!! This movie is beautifully done and the dancers are phenomenal!!! It's so awesome to have finally found this tape and actually sit down to watch it!! So, thank you SO much for letting me buy it!! I can't wait to so it to my family (and future kids (just not too soon!! lol!!)). Thanks again and have a great rest of your year!!!
Fantastic ! A shame it never made it to DVD!
