First of all I have never used or owned a chains...aw. I had several small trees around my home I wanted to take down so started looking for a chainsaw. My main concern was price as I wasn't sure I would use it much at all and just wanted something to get me thru a few trees. Used chainsaws sold for around the same price or even more so when I seen this refurbished Poulan for only $69.99 and free shipping I couldn't resist. Item arrived and looked almost new and came with a brand new chain. I put it to work cutting down and cutting up around 6 or 7 small trees ranging from around 3-8 inches in diameter. It performed great and look forward to using it to do some more. The only issue is it did cut off a couple of times while turning it to its side to cut and idling. This could have been due to being low on gas or user error. It would crank right back up though. For the price it can not be beat.

When it starts it works great but, it's hard to start a...nd until it warms up it stalls often. Still, it's light weight and easy to maneuver. I intend to have it looked at by a repair person, it may just need adjustment.

This saw grows on you. It is different from my oth...er more expensive saws but after you get used to it is fine. To fill the tank up and get some gas in the primer bulb will take a few tries. You must get the bulb full before priming. Maybe it takes a little time for gas to flow from the tank but finally it is accomplished. Try holding the bulb down toward the ground as this seems to help. After this exercise you probably will not want to run totally out of fuel as once the bulb loses prime you have to go through this again. Then you are ready to start. Pull the choke all the way out as this turns the ignition on and locks the throttle on a higher rpm setting.. When she warms up After a minute or so then be prepared to turn up the idle or T screw with a flat blade as you grab the throttle and let it come down to idle rpm. Idle is factory set too low and must be adjusted to the right or clockwise after you release the warm up throttle or trigger. . Adjust idle up with the T Screw so the chain starts to turn but then back off a little until the chain is just stopped. That is about 1 1/2 turns clockwise. After a little break in the saw runs fine and doesn't stall. After the first use the saw and its character becomes a friend and you know how to tame her.

I bought one of these for a "parts" machine for my PP4218. The lis...ting indicated it was a pp3816 when it was a p3816. The big difference between the two is the "PP" version has anti-vibration handles. Both units have the same motor, oil pump, brake, clutch the big difference being the color of the paint. The unit arrived and most everything looked good, but the chain bar was broken. I disassembled the unit and found the motor would not run because the piston ring was stuck to the piston as a result of corrosion. Because this was a project, I ordered a new ring and cleaned the internals of the motor. At this point I can tell you the condition is next to new. I believe the engine corrosion and ring failure was a result of water entering the motor during the refurb. process. All this said a lot of the starting problems on the refurbed units are likely stuck rings or something related to getting the units clean during the refurb. process. If you don't want a project I wouldn't get one, but if you enjoy this sort of thing "go for it."
