Baby Bottles

Bottles are a convenient feeding choice for many parents. Portable and versatile, baby bottles may be used when breastfeeding is not an option. With dozens of styles to suit a range of needs, there is sure to be a bottle to fit every baby.

What types of bottles are suitable for a newborn baby?

A major consideration when looking for newborn baby bottles is nipple size. Different designs feature various sizes of flow holes. For a baby new to bottles, slow flow designs are ideal because they most closely mimic the suction required for breastfeeding. Size one nipples feature a small hole that provides a suitable flow for a brand-new baby.

Beyond the nipple, you will need to consider the size of the bottle itself. For a newborn baby, a smaller size bottle is sufficient to avoid wasting formula or breast milk. The bottle need only be four ounces in capacity as this is typically the most a new baby can consume during feeding.

What materials are used in baby bottles?

Baby bottles are constructed from a variety of materials to suit both the parents and baby’s needs.

  • Plastic or silicone: Many baby bottles are constructed of durable plastic. In 2012, the FDA banned the use of BPA in baby bottles and cups. All plastic and silicone bottles are free of BPA and are safely constructed. They may even be recyclable when your baby no longer has use for them.
  • Glass: Glass bottles are a good option for those looking for an eco-friendly option for their baby. Due to their wider opening, they are typically easier to clean than plastic baby bottles. You may also store unused milk in glass bottles, while storing in plastic may cause the material to degrade faster. Glass bottles are also free of BPA.
  • Stainless steel: Stainless-steel bottles are another option for those looking for eco-friendly, BPA-free materials. Stainless steel has a distinct advantage over glass in that it is shatterproof if accidentally dropped while feeding your baby. Some bottle styles provide insulation, allowing you to keep your baby’s milk warm for a longer period of time.

How do you clean baby bottles?

It is recommended to clean baby bottles as soon as possible after each feeding as this will prevent a buildup of dangerous bacteria. Doing so will also prevent bottles from developing a foul odor that may be difficult to remove. To clean a bottle, follow these steps:

  • Fill the bottle with hot, soapy water. Using a baby bottle brush, gently scrub the inside of the bottle, making certain to reach inside any contours.
  • To clean bottle nipples, squeeze hot water through the nipple opening to be certain it is free from any leftover milk. Using a nipple cleaning brush, gently scrub the interior and exterior of the silicone.
  • Rinse the bottle and nipple. Allow both to air dry. To keep bottles free from bacteria and cloth particles, do not towel dry.
  • Alternatively, if your baby bottles are dishwasher safe, you may simply wash them in the top rack of the dishwasher.
