As Hawkeye Pierce, Chief Medial Surgeon of the 4077th MASH unit, you must rescue injured men on the field of battle and operate on them back in camp. Challenging you to save more patients is Major Frank Burns who also pilots a helicopter and operates on his patients. Gain points for rescuing men in the field and for successfully performing surgery. The first surgeon to reach 999 points wins the game.
Each of the four game variations can be played with one or two players. In the first game, players alternate between helicopter scenes and surgery scenes. In the helicopter scene, you must rescue men by maneuvering your helicopter among the trees while avoiding enemy tank fire. Take a hit, and your helicopter falls to the ground, costing you valuable time. Your helicopter can hold up to five people, at which time you must deposit them back in the MASH unit on the far left side of the screen. After 30 men have been rescued you proceed to the surgery round.
In surgery, you are presented with a top view of an injured man. Use the joystick to control your forceps and retrieve pieces of shrapnel. Don't let the shrapnel touch the patient's sides, or Frank Burns will receive points.
In games three and four, you must catch Colonel Potter's parachute-less skydiving medics. Games five and six are like games one and two, except your chopper is smaller and more maneuverable, and the enemy tank does not fire at you. Games seven and eight are devoted strictly to surgery.
