Son format (de 15,3 x 22.9 cm) n'est pas aussi petit que celui d'un format de poche; mais pas non plus aussi grand que celui d'un livre-album. Il permet donc son lecteur de pleinement admirer les tonnantes gravures de Gustave Dor , tout en tant assez petit pour pouvoir tre aussi facilement transport que la premi re dition d'un roman. Sa traduction en fran ais a t r alis e par F licit Robert de Lamennais, que beaucoup tiennent pour la meilleure de toutes, tout en tant accessible un large public. La pr sentation en prose est respect e dans cette dition. Mais il ne s'agit pas d'une version en vers, puisque la versification d'une traduction nuit toujours grandement la parfaite compr hension de ce qu'a voulu dire l'auteur. Ses lignes ne sont pas num rot es non plus. Une introduction historique et technique, enrichie d'illustrations et de sch mas, permet au lecteur n ophyte de pleinement comprendre comment Dante d composait le Purgatoire, avec ses myst rieux "cercles", "ciels" et autres "mobiles". Celui-ci trouvera galement un texte enrichi de pr s de 1000 notes explicatives, religieuses et historiques. Pour les rendre plus imm diatement accessibles et viter de fastidieuses all es et venues durant la lecture, elles sont plac es en bas de pages, et non en fin d'ouvrage.
