I played this to its death in the US and in Mexico in 1995 while helping to build a dive business and a beach hotel in Zihua.... so the guys I worked with were all from Guerrero, never heard much if any Chicano tunes so they preferred the traditional folk side CD2 to the upscale for me CD1 but they didn't NOT like it either!! I've been a Lobos fan ever since, saw them live in NY in the early 2000's and finally have another copy Of "JABFELA" for our library and iPods. I play guitar and MIDI keyboard, I've always liked their arrangements, expertise and feel. It was a fantastic introduction to Chicano and trad Mexican music before I actually went there to live and work though the Mexican influence in West Coast music was alive and well from long before, given the presence of Santana and the Mission District just on the other side of town: we lied in SF and Richmond Annex for 23 years...but then it was mostly ranchero and chiles fritos music, before the overture of the narco-corridos and Mex Hip Hop from Acapulco. Way far from the music of Quintana Roo and the Yucatan with its Afro/Cuban instrumentation and rhythms which are closer to my heritage and liking. Los Lobos made their own unique Mexican/American music unique, much to the delight of thousands in east LA and all over California, then beyond. Los Lobos' albums (I have heard all, own most) changed the Americana music of its own weight and importance: you probably can't find a musician who hasn't listented to them with admiration.Read full review
This compilation of some of Los Lobos music is Highly Recommended. It only covers until 1992, but it is some good ear candy. If you are not a regular listener of this great band you will become one after taking a listen. If you are a fan than you know what I mean. I bought this Collection because it has a few songs from the first few albums and more like alternates and rare 'LIVE' songs from the road.
An awesome collection. This is such a great addition to any collection, it's not even funny. The musicianship is stellar. David Hidalgo and Cesar Rosas are brilliant guitarists. The best part is that their playing serves the songs. The songs are also there, it is not just instrumental prowess. I was really impressed with; the Monkey Song, Will the Wolf Survive, When the Circus Comes, and Down on the Riverbed. It is an awesome collection.
I bought it for my cousin. She really likes it, especially the songs in Spanish.
