This review is for Gore Vidal's LINCOLN. I have this miniseries on VHS. It's simply time to upgrade. Sam Waterston and Mary Tyler Moore are the quintessential Abraham and Mary Lincoln; simply perfect casting. Vidal took some license, but remains accurate and true to the times and biographical data, only extrapolating when necessary. It is completely credible. The story is not dry or stuffy. It flows like a movie and has the rare quality of merging documentary-style facts with high production quality film drama. Whether you're a Lincoln-phile, as I am, or simply enjoy good drama, while looking for some insight to our 16th president and his fragile wife, you will enjoy this masterpiece. A lot of actors have played Lincoln, Walter Huston, Raymond Massey, Henry Fonda, and soon to be Daniel Day Lewis. But Sam Waterston comfortably fits my vision of Lincoln. It is one of his best performances, period. I've seen Mary Tyler Moore in many television and some film productions. Contrasting her with the diminutive and controlling Mary Lincoln, wonderfully played by the late Ruth Gordon, I see an abandon and risk-taking that thoroughly works. These two women were born to play Mary Lincoln. When she goes into one of her hysterical rants, you will believe it when Moore lets go. You will be as uncomfortable with her behavior as Lincoln and his contemporaries were. She knew the role well. I think Moore's finest dramatic roles were in "Lincoln" and "The Gin Game," with her famous fellow star and TV husband Dick Van Dyke. There is no humor in that televised play, just intense drama and superb acting you never knew possible, particularly with these two comedic geniuses. Buy the DVD and enjoy fine acting in a true-to-life historical drama. Five StarsRead full review
Thus movie was so great I watched it 3 times! Everything about it was as good as all the great and famous movies we all love. The Civil war was especially difficult because our men were often fighting and killing men they were still good friends with! The acting was superb, human condition and the many stories within stories were mumerous. The colt itself stole your hurt from the minute he was born. It did not hurt that the men were not only great actors, they were so handsome !!
