What You Need to Know About Pool Filters

Swimming pools are fabulous for summertime fun, but pool water can get dirty fast. New and used pool filters help remove contaminants so that you’re never diving into murky water. You’ll find a selection of reasonably priced pool filters when you shop on eBay.

The three types of pool filters

New and used pool filters for sale come in three basic varieties:

  • Sand filters: Sand filters can trap contaminants between 20 and 100 microns in diameter. They can be used in both freshwater and saltwater aboveground pools. They’re the most cost-effective pool filter on the market, but they do require more frequent cleaning than other types of pool filters. If you use a sand filter with your pool, you’ll need to backwash every few weeks.
  • Cartridge filters: Cartridge filters can trap contaminants as small as 10 microns in diameter. They are typically used in spa-type pools. Though they need to be cleaned frequently, they can be cleaned without backwashing. They take up far less room than sand filters, which makes them easier to install.
  • Diatomaceous earth (DE) filters: Diatomaceous earth is a sediment that contains the fossilized remains of microscopic creatures called diatoms. When used as a filter, diatomaceous earth can trap contaminants as small as three microns in diameter. Because of this, DE filters are the most efficient filters for residential pools that will see a lot of use.
Which specific companies manufacture pool filters?

Well-known pool filter manufacturers include:

  • Hayward
  • Pentair
  • Sta-Rite: Although Sta-Rite is a division of the Pentair Corporation, it functions more or less autonomously.
  • Intex
  • Jandy
  • Waterway
  • Bestway
The main parts of pool filters

Each type of pool filter has its own unique set of parts. The only component that is common to all three pool filter varieties is the pressure gauge.

  • Sand filter parts: Sand filter parts consist of a multiport valve (MPV), a pressure gauge, o-rings, clamps, clamp bands, the filter tank, laterals, a baffle, a drain cap, and a gasket.
  • Cartridge filters: Cartridge filters have the fewest parts because they don’t have a backwash assembly. Cartridge filter parts consist of an intake elbow, a closure plate, the cartridges themselves, a collector manifold, a tank, an outlet, drain plugs, an air bleeder assembly, bulkheads, and a pressure gauge.
  • DE filters: DE filters are the most complex pool filters. DE filter parts consist of an inlet pipe, filter grids, a manifold, bulkhead fittings, a standpipe, a spreader plate, wing nuts, o-rings, a tank, and a tank seal retainer.
