I bought this book to use as a homeschooling aid for introductory German. Most foreign language courses focus on vocabulary for tourists, which would not suit my purposes. But this book is perfect for my use because it focuses on everyday German words. Each page has an illustration of a different common scenario - a family eating dinner, grocery shopping, on a picnic, a zoo visit, playing in the back yard, etc. - and all the items in the picture are labeled with the German names. There are approximately 30-40 words on each illustration, which can be colored by the child to reinforce learning. There is also a list of the words & their English translations in the back of the book. Although it's not by any means a complete German course (you will still have to add learning materials for verbs and for pronunciation), it's a good start and very engaging for young and old alike. Oversize softback with heavy text paper and a laminated cover. Very nice! Also comes in French, Spanish and English versions. Dover Publications.Read full review
