The movie arrived as expected sealed in package as new. Played flawlessly. This is the third time, or maybe the fourth that I’ve seen this movie it’s absolutely great and very suspenseful. Not as authentic as I’d like it to be as far as Naval operations go. But it’s still suspenseful and very entertaining great actors, Denzel Washington and 1 other A level actor but I can’t recall his name; great actor and has been around for a long time.

The way they stomp around on Iron Grate Decks in a Boomer is Astonishing. I like Gene Hackman but he like Sean Connery are both about forty years too old to be Submarine Drivers. The premise is absurd as is the story of the scism whilst under threat of a nuclear holocaust. Worth watching is only for a laugh now and then. They got a few things right but only a very few.

Another Tom Clancy submarine thriller, almost as good as "Hunt for Red October", however a lot of really "raw" sailor language discredits (in my humble opinion) what would otherwise be an EXCELLENT movie. A very intriguing exposure of the possible inner dealings of the US military command structure taken to the extreme, creating mutiny on this nuclear submarine at least twice. The struggle pits the Captain of this nuclear submarine against his Executive Officer in a struggle to launch their nuclear arsenal at the USSR or not. Although a nearby Russian sub fires 5 torpedoes at them, most of the "battle" in this movie is within this US submarine among it's own officers. The free use of the "F" word and many versions of it, as well as much more otherwise unnecessary vulgarity and profanity have earned this movie an "R" rating. What's the point of all the vulgarity? This is an example of "Hollywood" gone amuck and destroying an excellent movie with childish antics which any high ranking US military officer in the real world would have hopefully out grown decades earlier. It's long past time for Hollywood to have grown up. This type of "artistic liberty" destroys much of the historical credibility which this movie could have otherwise earned, as well as being very detrimental to our own culture. I love submarine movies, and this one has a good overall emphasis on the dangers of the use of nuclear weapons. Because of the real-world possibilities of such a thing actually happening (read about Soviet nuclear submarines during the Cuban Missile Crisis), even as a novice historian, I do encourage the viewing of this film for those who can look past the vulgar language.Read full review
powerful stars in washington and hackman faceoff for control of the boat in a time of emminent war. both think they are right in this high stakes showdown between them. operating without open communication because of radio failure a decision must be made to launch a preemptive strike at a rogue russian faction to possible save the world. but the last radio con that was cutoff may have cancelled those orders. its hackman who wants to continue as if no orders have been recieved, but washington feels it prudent to reestablish radio communications to be certain prior to launch. those decisions lead to a mutiny aboard the USS ALABAMA a nuclear submarine. excellent supporting cast of viggo mortensen, rocky carroll george dzunda and james gandolfino lend credance to this excellent sit on the edge of your seat thrillerRead full review
This movie presents a difficult dilemma of the using of nuclear power. The submarine executive offiver (Washington) and the submarine's commander (Hackman) present two attitudes towards the role of nuclear weapon in modern war. I use this movie as a trigger to discussing the effect of nuclear power on the modern world. The screenplay is well written (despite many F' words that got the moving its R rating) and the acting is almost flawless. Highly recommended!
