great lens but slightly outdated for wildlife photography
I am a beginning p...hotographer, trying to use my old manual focus lenses on my Sony NEX5. This lens needs a good tripod, that is for sure, as it's focal length of 450mm equivalent on an APS-C sensor magnifies every movement. So far still struggling to achieve optimal results. The lens is not too heavy and not too big; its probably the minimum necessary for wildlife photography. Old lenses often have some issues with Chromatic Aberration but that is rather well controlled in this "L" type lens, although maybe not at the level of more modern ones. If you do not want to spend thousands of euro/dollars and have the patience, shooting with vintage manual focus lenses on a mirrorless digital camera is certainly recommended.
Inexpensive, and superb!
I have this lens and the 2x Tele-extender, and use ...it with an m4/3 adapter on an Olympus E-M1. Terrific optics, solid build, and great performance for a manual lens. I tend to use it most at f5.6, I find it easy to handle on a monopod or tripod, and think it is not at all too heavy, considering it’s 1200mm reach. Focusing accurately with this lens is easy! There is often some CA, but I find that very easy to fix in Lightroom. I replaced a Bigma (50-500) with this set-up, and get much better results with it! Someday, I may spend the money on the automatic Olympus 300 f4, but I am in no hurry to do so!

Canon 300 FD
This has been a great addition to my Sony A7. It keeps the weig...ht matched with the FE 70-200mm, yet is sharp and accurate using the focus peaking function. Now I just need a 400mm or a 500mm. Seriously, with a shutter speed of 640 I was able to catch a heron in flight at F8. It was a great investment for me.

This lens is exactly what I hoped for my ...wildlife pictures on my GH2 camera ; sharp, easy to handle , I have the benefit of the extra tele converter ( ETC) of my Lumix µFT ! Perfect !
