In the context of the 21st Century, the film "Battleship Potemkin" would undoubtedly fall flat, but given the available technology and the infancy of the medium when the film was produced, Sergei Eisenstein had indeed created an epic motion picture. While the modern DVD incarnate features a less than remarkable transfer, the fact that it is available attests to its endurance even as a silent film. Like most any film, it cannot capture the overall story of the 1905 Potemkin Mutiny, or the 1905 revolution. If you have read one of the few books in English on the subject you will without a doubt be disappointed. I would recommend following the film with the recent book "Red Mutiny," by Neil Bascomb, this will put the film in greater context for historical purposes. For film studies, "Battleship Potemkin" can be analyzed in the realm of other silent greats like "The General," "Metropolis" and "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari" among others. Eisenstein's masterpiece ranks with the best international films of the day, but I prefer the simplicity of American silent films overall. A deep and interesting film that is required viewing for the "film snob" in your home or family.Read full review
Based on true events, this DVD movie captures the story of the 1905 revolt aboard the Russian Battleship Ptomekin as legend has it. Originally intended as inspirational Soviet propaganda, it exceeded itself and became a masterwork. An outstanding film that's rarely viewed today. Suitable for school age children and up (especially for a history class), provided that it has been reviewed by a parent first. One of the Soviet era classics! This particular version was issued in 2004 on a DVD format with some digital remastering to enhance the old film. Please note that the review is for the movie only. When most reviews are written, there is no clue as to who the seller is.
Little known to the modern American film fan, BATTLESHIP POTEMKIN represents a revolution in film making. During the silent film era most directors simply aimed a camera and told an obvious story. In BATTLESHIP, director Serge Eisenstein literally bombards the viewer with dark symbolic montages, starkly emotional melodrama, and a real sense of rhythm and flow. History shows us that there never really was a massacre on the Odessa Steps, so what was Eisenstein doing? He was making this entire period in Russian history more interesting, more compact, more comprehensive, and more REAL.
I'm very happy this historic and significant piece of film-making has finally been produced on DvD. I thoroughly enjoyed it not only for its social commentary, but also for its historic value. The depictions of events leading up to and including the Russian Revolution are still graphic and stirring after all these years.
Although parts were hard to see which is normal for films this old overall a good buy and very entertaining.
