A good basic GPS with valuable lifetime map updates.
I had already gotten a 540 TM for my wife six months earlier and found it useful enough that we were swapping it into whatever car we were using for any trip out of the local area. When I saw a five inch screen TomTom TM (lifetime traffic and map updates) I bid on it and got it for a good price. I was mildly surprised at how different many of the screens and control choices were different in the 550 that is deemed simpler to use by the manufacturer and denying useful options by chat room critics. The fairly basic TomTom GPS receivers are both good, solid units with very quick lock onto satellite signals as long as it has not moved much from its last fix before being turned on, easy programming once you learn the system, accurate maps, well-planned routes, accurate travel times, good visual route guidance at a glance, quick replanning when you do not follow a prescribed instruction, and thorough audio guidance for unfamiliar areas. Provided that an electronic (versus human) voice is selected, spoken street names provide reassurance that the turn is at the correct spot, but unless driving alone in a busy, unfamiliar area, it quickly becomes too much with several long announcements as you approach a turn, get closer, and arrive at the turn. I found that we normally set the sound to mute. The revised control screens of the 550XL, vs. the 540XL, seem to slightly simplify the most common instructions, like planning a new route, and slightly complicate instructions that are used only rarely, requiring a few more layers of menu to be accessed. It seems as though all the significant operations can be performed on either one. The traffic information is only displayed around certain large population centers, but is surprisingly prompt and accurate when it appears (the simplified Lifetime traffic requires a unit with "T" suffix and the power cord must be plugged into the unit to be the antenna for the signals). There is apparently a more complicated traffic system on higher priced units. The map updates are good and are a major feature to me. Most GPS manufacturers charge nearly as much for a map update as the price of a new device with newer maps already loaded. TomTom provides quarterly updates off the Internet on units with the "M" suffix - a real bargain. Read full review

Very good unit with precise directions and easy to use and set.
This is a very good unit, easy to use and set up. The voice directions are precise and informed like ¼ mile before the next turn when you are in a highway and when there are 2 consecutive turns in a very short distance the voice direction tells you in advanced both turns so you do not miss it the second turn, this a great feature that you do not get in other GPS units. The windshield mount is not very good.

TomTom 550TM GPS units are easy to operate, simple to program, great Value
I now own two XXL550TM GPS units. I have read reviews saying they are dangerous and hard to program. I find the TomTom XXL550TM GPS to be an outstanding value, easy to program, easy to setup and very easy to use. For the people that have issues with the windshield mounting should try to moisten the suction pad prior to attaching the GPS to the windshield. I do recommend every owner read the online manual. There are many features that you will never find with casual use without reading the manual.

Power at your fingertips!
This unit has changed the perception of tomtoms in the past! Tomtoms have always been regarded to as, too complicated and hard to use, heck I GAVE one to my sister as a gift, and her husband ended up with it and she bought herself a NIVU because she thought it was too complicated, well Tomtom XXL 550TM is changing that, with the easymenu it gives you the tomtom power, in a way that's easy to understand and use! the 5" screen is also a great plus!
