West Point story VHS
I saw this as a teenager 66 years ago, and its entertainment value holds up surprisingly well after TWO THIRDS OF A CENTURY! Everyone but Doris Day is long gone, but they're still very entertaining folks. Another surprise: Virginia Mayo is a terrific dancer! This film is well worth taking a look at and I'll enjoy it again in a few months.

The West Point Story
In the 1960's there were only three television stations in Southeastern NM. I lived for 9:30pm on Friday and Saturday nights when the movie of the week came on. One Saturday night a musical called "The West Point Story" was playing. I knew immediately I would like the story because of the stars. Doris Day, James Cagney, Gordon MacRae, and Virginia Mayo. I was enthralled by the music, and the acting of Mr. Cagney. He was one of the greatest "hoofers" of all time, and had the greatest comedic timing I've seen.
This was a good old fashioned love story. The war was over, and the cadets of West Point didn't have to worry about deployment. I was impressed by their love of honor, corps, and country, not unlike our men and women of today.
One particular line I got a giggle out of when I watched it this time the cast advisor telling Jimmy Cagney, "There are no women allowed at West Point."
I guess the laugh was on him.
I recorded this movie on my VCR 10 years ago, and it was worn out. I was so happy to see that it had been released as a classic in 2000. The music, dancing, sentiment, and acting were well done, and being filmed in black and white made it better.
I'm glad I came across it on EBay. I can return to my youth on a regular basis and remember my worry free existence of the past.Read full review
