Jodorowsky films finally get the DVD release they dsrve
You're never going to get more bang for your buck than with this set...Jodorowsky's first 3 films (Fando y Lis, El Topo and The Holy Mountain), a documentary about Jodorowsky which runs an hour and a half and a soundtrack disc for both El Topo and Holy Mountain. That's six discs for a little more than the cost of El Topo on it's own. That was what I was originally planning to buy, but I realized for a few dollars more, I could get that plus 5 other discs, so I of course went with the latter. I loved 2 of the 3 films. I have yet to finish Fando y Lis. It was made on a shoestring budget and it shows. I found it confusing and a little boring, but hey! It was his first film. I had seen El Topo before and loved it. It tells the story of a gunslinger on a quest for enlightenment. He must defeat 4 master gunslingers before he can achieve this. That's just the basic plot, but there's a lot more to it than that. Lots of bizarre and disturbing images mixed with beautiful landscapes, an engaging story and of course, nudity. Some parts are a little dated and the conversations are dubbed, but this won't affect the viewing experience. One of my favorite films! Finally, one of the trippiest and most disturbing movies I've ever seen...the Holy Mountain. I was iffy about watching this movie, not so much for the gore and strong sexual content, but for the sacreligious content. After reading many rave reviews about it however, and since it was included in the box-set, I decided to give it a go. The first 20 minutes is where the vast majority of all of the Christianity bashing takes place. Being a Christian myself, it was somewhat difficult to watch, but there was one scene in particular where I had to look away, and I'm sure you'll know what I mean when you see it. It was very unexpected, shocking, and the music gives it a sad and at the same time frightening mood, but if you aren't a christian it probably won't bother you that much. There are some really neat scenes however in the first 20 minutes, like the conquest of mexico being performed by live lizards and frogs or birds flying out of a bullet wound. The rest of the movie is a stoner's dream. Through a sea of color and trippy imagery, we are introduced to 7 people who represent 7 planets. With the help of their alchemist friend (played by Jodorowsky himself), they go on a quest in search of the holy mountain, self knowledge and immortality. This movie was absolutely brilliant and I've seen it around 5 times already. Highly recommended. I haven't seen the documentary yet, but I'm sure it will be enjoyable. Jodorowsky is a very intelligent man, and other interviews I've seen have been very interesting and funny. If you are a fan of movies with high tech gadgets, big noises and explosions, then this set probably isn't for you. If you like intelligent movies that dig deep into your mind and soul, or if you want to have the best trip of your life, do not miss this set.Read full review

The Films of Alejandro Jodorowsky 4-Disc DVD Set
I first found out about this director (and his head-tripping movies) when a friend of mine lent me LA MONTAGNA SACRA. I tried to find out more movies from Jodorowsky and when I discovered about this dvd set I was estatic. The set includes not just THE HOLY MOUNTAIN and EL TOPO but also FANDO Y LIS and LA CRAVATE. Besides that the soundtrack to THE HOLY MOUNTAIN and EL TOPO are also included. It's a shame RAINBOW THIEF is not in the collection. I would highly recommend this set to anyone who would like to view non contemporary movies (read: Hollywood!). 5/5 stars

...Wow...What the **** was that?!? Awesome...
Listen, the only people buying this are people who already have seen it, so i can go on and on, but you already know. El Topo is an amazing story of Enlightenment that blows your mind. Echoes of various religions resonate in one's mind, and images of really trippy stuff is stuck with you for days. Holy Mountain, well, I think those folks who created the concept of language needs to make a few new words to describe this...this...I don't know what the hell it is, but it is so brilliant. Jodorowsky once said something to the extent of, "cinema is more powerful than LSD," and I'm telling you this film is so...mindblowing and just out there. I haven't seen Fando y Lis, but I'm sure it is amazing.

Some of the greatest films ever made on a great DVD set
This is a great DVD set. Anchor Bay did a wonderful job restoring the detail and color of Jodorowsky's films. I enjoyed Alejandro's commentaries on his films, particularly The Holy Mountain (which explains A LOT), which is my favorite. Jodorowsky believed that we could change the world (or at least people's minds) through the oft-overlooked public vehicle of film. In today's modern world of vapid Hollywood "schlock and [CGI] awe" films, Jodorowsky's films empower and transcend.

While I bought this box set mostly for The Holy Mountain, the other films are truly amazing as well. The new remasters look amazing, especially since the only way to get his films previously were old-beat up VHS tapes or dvd bootlegs. I'm so grateful to see these on DVD. If you haven't seen any of his films yet they really will change your life forever. The Holy Mountain is a quintessential surrealist masterpiece.
