Sonic Riders (Nintendo GameCube, 2006)
About this product
|Sonic Riders finds the iconic hedgehog taking a breather from his platform exploits and engaging in high-speed air board races with 16 of his beastly buddies. Dr. Eggman plays host to an intergalactic tournament spanning 14 tracks, from the industrial Metal City to the tropical Splash Canyon, each filled with ramps, rails, tunnels, alternate routes, and plenty of gold rings. Sonic and close friends Tails, Knuckles, Amy Rose, and Cream the Rabbit must defeat Eggman's dream team of riders, known collectively as the Babylon Rogues. Characters are individually rated in speed, power, and flight, while over 30 types of ability-enhancing equipment are available to further customize riders. |
As in traditional skateboard and snowboard titles, players can perform a number of grabs, spins, and other tricks, but the air boards have the added ability to create turbulence, which players can strategically use to draft behind their rivals. Another feature of the game is an air meter, which is filled by performing tricks and unleashing massive jumps. Players can use the stockpiled air at any time during the competition for more precise cornering, a speed boost, or to create a tornado to temporarily stun pursuing rivals. Up to four speed demons can compete in racing, battle, and tag modes, with the latter supporting cooperative play.

Infuriating. I love it.
Y'know how there are games like Dark Souls and Super Meat Boy, which are specifically DESIGNED to make you angry? Well this is one of those types of games, but it clearly wasn't developer intended. One slip up could cost you a race, and it's absolutely crazy. Track layouts are well designed and memorable, and the controls are near perfect, with only the slightest control lag every once in a while. The CG cutscenes are absolutely beautiful, even matching Pixar quality (except Tails's model), and the in-engine cutscenes are cartoony and silly, which is just how I like my Sonic. There are bits where it takes itself too seriously (apparently, bird people can't fly because their ancestors angered the gods?), but overall, the game takes on a fun mood, even having Amy chase Sonic around with a hammer at one point in good old Tom & Jerry fashion. Not to mention, there's tons of content, and the game's intense difficulty will give you hours of fun. Or pure, unfiltered rage. Probably rage. The strange thing is, this feels like it was going to be an arcade game at one point. Take out the story mode and quicktime events, make your air gauge a time limit, and make the control scheme one of those snowboarding type machines, and you have an arcade hit. There's even a tutorial movie at the title screen that plays if you don't touch anything. A quirky little game that's great for any masochist's GameCube collection, I give this game 5 poorly voiced bird people out of 7.Read full review

Great product.Sonic racing games are awesome!
I bought this game to try to complete it and to train my skills in this game since i already played zero gravity.First off this games intro theme is awesome i like how its shows what the game is.Also, i like Amy's new attack yell or screech attack better than her hammer attack and also the playable characters, but i haven't completed it yet.Same as Heroes,i dislike Amy can't ballup like in sa2b or the advance series yet again ruining this games appeal for me,but unlike heroes it tries to make up for it slightly with one of Amy's cutest moves other than Amy flash.Sonic's reaction is horrible ex. how he reacted in Amy hugging him in story mode. This due minor to make up for no ball animation with two attacks unlike Zero Gravity Amy's none hammer attacks are better as i stated.Unlike other racing games like mario kart 7 this game not absurd long to unlock characters adding to appeal, but still would've been better if it allowed Amy to ball up.Its multiplayer like Zero Gravity is really competitive that makes it nearly the best of the series, the battle mode in particular my fav. other than racing, but zg survival mode more fun. That being even more amazing with a coop mode were you can race with a partner cpu,but don't have the graphics that top it off.Sound 9/10 Graphics 6/10.Overall 9.5/10 appeal 4/10 for me.Read full review

Want Action? Want Speed? You got it!
Action! Speed! And much more!<br><br>This Sonic racing game has it all: sweet graphics in extreme environments, tons of playable characters who you can customize with special "Extreme Gear" boards and shoes --- and with multiple modes (Story, Mission, Time Attack, etc.) it has a high degree of re-playability.<br><br>For newer Sonic fans of shows like Sonic X (the same voice actors lend their voices for Sonic Riders) and games like Sonic Heroes and Shadow the Hedgehog, this is a perfect game that flows the same way story-wise as they do.<br><br>Older, "true blue" Sonic fans may be annoyed by the new Babylon Rogue characters (Wave the Swallow, Jet the Hawk and Storm the Albatross) and the plot for the two story modes (there's a "Heroes" storyline and a seperate "Rogues" one) - as they don't follow some of the more traditional plots in the earlier Sonic games. The biggest complaint I've heard in the community is how Wave is treated as smarter than Tails and Dr. Eggman - though in the guide it clearly states that her genius is limited to "Extreme Gear."<br><br>Probably the best point this game has going for it is the unique way in which you race. Not only do you get to race on the boards, but you have to keep your "air guage" filled - and one way you do that is by doing tricks off ramps and rails. You can also "ride" the turbulence of other players - which makes for awesome moves and last-second races to the finish line.<br><br>The controls are a bit complex at first, but once you do a few races, you get the hang of it. The hardest thing is probably making a good landing after doing tricks. Keeping your air guage full at times can be difficult as well - but what's a racing game without some challenge to it?<br><br>I haven't played the multiplayer mode yet, but it promises to be a lot of fun as well.<br><br>If nothing else, get the game for the awesome eye candy. The cut scenes and especially the anime-esque opener are fun to watch again and again. The soundtrack is also upbeat and catchy. I find myself singing it without realizing it.<br><br>It's not the best racing game out there, but it sure is a lot of fun! And the interesting controls and game play make it unique among most racing games.<br><br>If you've got the money to spend and you love that speedy blue hedgehog, go for it!Read full review
