About this product
- Product InformationIn Silent Service, you take on the role of a submarine captain, who must complete objectives ranging from seek and destroy to reconnaissance. Brought to you by Ultra and Konami, this sub-simulation game packs in several missions that will test your wits, speed and timing to their fullest potential. Your missions will be judged on accuracy, time completed and if the objectives of each one have been done. You will be assigned a rank according to your skill on each mission.
During your missions, you will have access to several different parts of the sub. Maps of short and long range territory can be viewed, the periscope can be extended for tactical situations and you can even get a view of your officer and his equipment around the ship. You also have different weapons and tools at your disposal. Torpedoes are ready for disposing of the enemy, flack provides camouflage from the enemy, plus several radars for detecting battleships and other subs. Keep your nerves and wits in check and be ready for anything.

Bad reviews are from impatient people...
This is a simulation, folks. How fast do you think the action moved during World War II in the Pacific Ocean if you were a submarine captain? Most of the time you're going to be cruising around and looking for targets. The strategy involved in picking an approach and a method of attack and escape is what makes this game great. You aren't going to get dropped into the middle of a battle and slam buttons until you win (although there are some scenarios where you happen to surface in the middle of an enemy battle group and you have to act fast); usually you'll see some distant targets and hope that you can sneak in a volley of torpedoes before the destroyers and cruisers realize you're there and turn to intercept you.
Trying to survive after you've been spotted is fairly entertaining as well. You have a few options. You can get a few torpedoes off and hope that they hit the ships coming at you, or you can surface and try to out-shoot them with your deck gun (usually a bad idea). You can turn and run, but unless you are on the surface they'll be able to catch you at full flank. The best strategy is to dive, try to find a thermo layer of water and turn the engines off. You'll hear their pings get closer and the sound of depth charges going off. If you're lucky they'll go away eventually. If you aren't, then you will start taking damage. Depending on what the damage is you might sink or you might need to blow your emergency tanks and bolt up to the surface as a last ditch effort to not die. Of course, then you are on the surface next to the ships that are trying to kill you so you better hope your gun, torpedoes, or engines are working.
This is easily one of the classic NES games, hands down. It just takes a while to get into it, like some of the great films that don't immediately beat you over the head with explosions.Read full review

Ummm Silent Service Is Slow
Silent Service is one of those games I feel Nintendo released just to make there game catalog bigger. The game is slow, and very boring. There is only so much you can do in a submarine game. Only buy if you need it for a collection!

Silent Service (1989)
This game is somewhat boring and very difficult to understand. Plus, there is no clear plot to the game.

Fun old game
This is a definite '80's game. The graphics are not very good, but it is a fun game to play. It is more of a strategy game than an action game.
