Wonderful! A Science Fiction and Conservation Masterpiece! This is the True Widescreen Version!
I first saw Silent Running when I was nine years old, and it made a tremendous impression on me - in fact, it was the first movie that actually blew me away. It was made in 1971, at the height of the conservation and back-to-the-land movement, and will teach you more about the importance of preserving nature than any ten college lectures. The visual effects by Douglas Trumbull, of the aircraft carrier-sized space ships with their forest and garden domes, and the daring escape through Saturn's Rings, are absolutely stunning. There are also three lovable little robots who help to take care of the giant ship and domes, while the lead character of Freeman Lowell, played by Bruce Dern, is one of the most believable and endearing heroes I have ever seen. He is willing to give everything, even his own life, to save the last remaining of Earth's forests. Silent Running has wonderful visionary music by Peter Schickele, which fits perfectly with the action and plot of the story, and two breathtakingly beautiful songs sung by Joan Baez (who does not appear in the movie) recalling the beauty of the Earth that had been lost in the grim future that this brilliant movie portrays. This is the version of Silent Running to buy. It is real widescreen, and not just letterbox like the 1997 DVD with the original movie poster on the cover. This version also has more than an hour of special features, showing how this masterpiece was produced on what would now be considered a shoestring budget, along with interviews of Bruce Dern and Douglas Trumbull, both at the time of production in 1971 and when this DVD was released in 2002. I would highly recommend Silent Running to all lovers of Nature, to Science Fiction fans, and to anyone who enjoys late 60s and early 70s music. Read full review

Great Space Adventure
I admit it...Bruce Dern makes any movie in which he performs...better. Noble endeavor, saving plants.

Silent Running, a 70's sci-fi classic!
Classic 1970's tree hugger meets 2001 Space Odyssey. Set in the near future, Earths natural resources have been trashed. A fleet of cargo ships carrying the last surviving forests orbit out in space, waiting to re-green the Earth. The special effects are very well done from 1972 as are the cargo ships and domes. These are all models not computer graphics. There are 3 small robot assistants that are great, actual midgets inside. Also done well is the feeling of being on a space cargo ship. The acting is fairly good as Bruce Dern plays the tragic, nerdy eco-astronaut well. A couple of the other crew members are over done as being total jerks. The music makes me want to gag though. Smoke pot, hug a tree and skip around lyrics detract from the scenes. Overall a great sci-fi classic for sure!

Great movie for the period
Last time I saw this film was in the theater back in the 70's. It has a great message about the future of our planet.

A sci-fi Oxymoron! (Laserdisc review)
Silent Running is a very good techno-hippie film that almost reminds me of the movie Moon by Sam Rockwell. I had never heard of this movie before but was lucky enough to run across it while searching for unique Sci-Fi laserdiscs to add to my collection. Speaking of laserdiscs, the LD version of this movie looks very good. The picture quality is clear, nearly DVD quality. I would recommend this movie to any Sci-Fi geek due to the overabundance of electronics, robots, gadgets, and gizmos.
