Entry Level Phone for Preteen or Older Person
The SAMSUNG SCH-U340 is a great entry-level phone for people that do not need all the bells and whistles; perfect for the preteen or grandpa. It is a simple flip phone with a VGA camera and texting, nothing else. Phone is compact and lightweight, has an internal antenna, with the camera lens at the top of the front flap. Fits nicely in pocket.
External display (size of a postage stamp so grandpa had better use his glasses) shows date, time, battery life, signal strength and caller ID. Screen is monochrome and acts as an acceptable viewfinder for the camera, which does not have a flash.
Internal display is about 2 inches and is a basic 65,000 color screen. Color resolution is okay but graphics are a little course, but display overall is respectable. The SCH-U340 uses a Samsung menu rather than a Verizon, which I rate as a plus. You can change the color, font style, contrast, and the backlight time. Controls are easy to understand. Keypad buttons are slightly higher than the surface of the phone with large backlit numbers. I like the fact there is a little separation between the buttons. Overall, it makes for easier use by a younger person or older person, who has a bit of a hand coordination problem.
You can enter 500 contacts into the phone book with room in each contact for 5 phone numbers and 2 e-mail address. Your preteen will love this feature; grandpa will care less. Other features are vibrate mode, text messaging, voice command and dialing, calendar, 3 alarm clocks (good for the preteen so she is not late for class or to remind grandpa to take his meds), a calculator, notepad, speaker phone and “ICE” (In Case of Emergency contacts – perfect if grandpa wanders off.)
Reception is good (this is a tri-mode phone), voices loud and clear. Speakerphone is a touch off, but adequate. Battery life is what you make it, like on every other cell phone. You should be able to pick up this discontinued phone for about $10.00 to $15.00. Do recommend you buy a new battery, as used batteries can be very chancy. For what it is, an older basic camera phone, I give it 3 stars out of 5.Read full review
